Biography of Afroboogie | |
| Real name / | Nelson Moreira |
| Moniker(s) / | afroboogie, juniortek |
Nelson’s experience has taken him to become a sought after resident dj due to the club residencies and various gigs he has held warming up for the world's biggest artists and holding his own as headliner at various clubs. He has received praise for his addictive warm up sets but also for his big room sets with his unique fusion between house and techno with a common underlying theme which is deep, percussive and funky. In the past 4 years he has become one of Dubai's underground music purveyors that is still versatile enough to be accessible. An Afroboogie set is both edgy and entertaining and it is no doubt as he is continually booked to play the main circuit in Dubai.
Over the last decade he has been responsible for his own rise in two different territories, something that very few can claim to have achieved. From being a headliner in his native South Africa where he often played the main rooms and biggest festivals, to this moment in Dubai which is currently one of the favorite destinations for DJ's to play and where on a weekly basis you will find huge names behind the decks. Having been the choice warm up for the likes of Steve Lawler, Satoshi Tommie, Sasha, Victor Calderone, Carl Craig and many more he has played in front of crowds between 500 and 20 000, takes it all in and releases his energy onto everyone else which has taken him to gigs as far across as Miami (WMC 2007, 2008), London (AKA), Lisbon (Queens), Moscow, St Petersburg, Antwerp (Cafe d Anvers), Beirut, Shanghai, Almaty, Doha and Dubai.
The start of his career in 1989 was long before dj’s got any recognition, never mind press, he was playing all night sets in Johannesburg’s clubs and later partly responsible for the start and rise of the early raves he swiftly became a respected name in the country’s club circles. A 5 year residency at ESP in Jo’burg, made Sunday afternoons at the infamous club unforgettable as did his own Friday club, Flyhouse. This established him to a point where he initiated and started the release of dj mix compilations and went on to release nine cd compilations in the period from 1996-2002. With a gig schedule taking him to all corners of the country he established himself as a confident DJ, playing major events like Ministry of Sound, ICE, Cream, Womad, Amnesia and Pacha tours, some with audiences close to 20 000 people.
On the production front releases on labels like Defected, Stereo (Chus & Ceballos label), Twisted America (home to Superchumbo and Danny Tenaglia), Audio Therapy (Dave Seaman) and Younan Music (Saeed Younan) continue to push his envelope as a producer and has received support from the likes of Timo Maas, Steve Lawler, Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish, Tom Stephan, Steve Porter, Oscar G, Saeed, Roger Sanchez, Laurent Garnier Chus & Ceballos and even Sasha to name few.
Media coverage has been received with reputable music magazines, TV and general press surrounding releases or appearances. From FHM to DJ Mag, IDJ, BPM, Play, Infusion and various newspaper publications worldwide. He was noted as "One to watch in 2008" by IDJ Magazine (September 07)
