His neighbour from Soul Group (Loose Ends) heard him once and asked him to dj at her own party. In 1991 Jay and his cousin got into the rave hardcore and early house scene. They were playing cassettes recorded by Top Buzz and Kenny Ken at Linford studios and Jay would practice mcing over the beats.
