Biography of Craig McWhinney | |
Craig has notched up a solid decade of DJing in his hometown of Melbourne, playing to appreciative crowds from the few hundred sweaty techno fans in the basement of Deep Eleven through showcase gigs for clubs Sorry Grandma and Honkytonks and festivals such as Two Tribes and War of the Worlds. Having been an integral part of the Melbourne Techno Collective for 8 years now, as a DJ Craig has forged his own unique sound, influenced equally by the sounds of Detroit, Dub Techno, House, and Bass music.
However it wasn’t until the launch of his label, Haul Music (alongside Mike Callander and Christian Vance), that many of his Australian peers took notice of him as a producer. Now, after some incredible feedback from techno’s heavyweights such as DJ Hell and Phil Kieran, and an appearance in the Beatport Techno Charts, the excitement surrounding this quiet achiever is truly infectious.
However, McWhinney’s success is no flash-in-the-pan. In 2007 Philadelphia’s minimal techno stalwart Someone Else snapped up one of Craig’s tracks “Gold Rush” for his Unfoundsound imprint, immediately catching the attention of innovative DJs such as New York’s DJ Three. While on tour in Australia, Three was so determined to find the producer he asked every other DJ in the country who he was, citing the track as one of his best for the year.
As Craig’s hero’s become his peers, expect some exciting things in the not too distant future. |
