Biography of Craig Obey


Elektrik Force is the new project from DJ/Producer Craig Obey. Obey has brought together musicians Bret Hunt and Michael Di Francesco with singers Anthony Chiappetta, Chance the US based Sunkids Diva, Darryl Beaton, DJ Yogi and Melanie George for an album due to be completed mid 2004.

Obey has had club chart success in Australia and UK with a number of remixes as Funk Corporation, two of which reached the Top10 of the Music Week and DMC Club charts Christmas 02/03; Disco Montego "Magic" and Aviators "Poison To My Mind".

In Australia, Craig’s Funk Corporation remixes notched up more national dance chart tracks than any other local production team in 2002/03 including four No.1's, four Top10's and four Top20’s with mixes for Paul Mac, Hi Fi Mike, Rockmelons, love tattoo, Darren Glen, Disco Montego, Aviators, SubQ, illpickl and Good feat. Obey's previous recording venture, Platinum Groove Project captured the No.1 spot on the national dance chart in 2001 and in 2000 his remix of “Free 2000” by AK Soul featuring Joceyln Brown, hit No.1 on the national dance charts. Craig’s productions/remixes have also been featured on Hed Kandi and Ministry Of Sound Australian compilations.

As a DJ, Craig has produced a number of mix compilations including ‘A Night In the Life with Funk Corporation’, a two cd set including one cd of his remixes and original tracks. He has played at most major dance venues around Australia over the last 15 years, including a 5 year residency at Home in Sydney and residencies in at One Love and Seven in Melbourne and Family Brisbane. Craig has supported many internationals including Roger Sanchez, Fatboy Slim, Deep Dish, Dimitri From Paris, David Morales, Norman Jay, Eric Morrillo, Basement Jaxx, Prodigy, Superfunk, Barbara Tucker and Gatecrasher to name a few. His mainfloor style of filtered house, breaks and electro-clash mixed with soulful and sometimes edgy vocals, wild scratches and swing grooves always deliver on the dancefloor. Craig’s DJ standing also led to radio shows and guest spots on Radio DEX, KISS Fm, WILD Fm, Rhythm Fm and TripleJ Fm.

As a producer, Craig's first studio recordings “Feel The Vibe” and “Can't Escape The Funk” came out under the Craig Obey vs Mark Munro moniker through Sony Dancepool and Fat Albert Records. Since then his production skills have lead him to collaborate on tracks with renowned artists/DJs Steve ’Silk’ Hurley, E-Smoove, Chance, Rob Tissera, Joe T. Vannelli, Disco Montego and Iva Davies (Icehouse).

In 2000, Craig decided to build the Grooveyard recording studio in Sydney and put his training as an audio engineer to serious use, once completed Plantinum Groove Project became his next creative guise. Three years on and the Elektrik Force was born. Recording an album has become a priority for Craig together with the formation of A Higher Sound Recordings, a new label set up with Andrew Penhallow and film & media company, The Swish Group. The label has signed Disco Montego (excl. Australia), Waldo G. and naturally Craig Obey & The Elektrik Force .Other signings are on the horizon, so together with the Elektrik Force album, Craig’s production and remixes will also be on call for releases from A Higher Sound artists.
