Their name translated to English means “crooked”, the crookers have won important audiences by dint of large sep, absolute protagonists of the I Love Techno to Gent (Belgium) and Ultrà Music Festival in Miami. Phra & Bot are two italian dj’s, sharing a strong passion for hip hop music that formed their eclectic sounds that made their original trademark. Active since 2003, their remix have had a long list of big names such as Armand Van Helden, U2, The Chemical Brothers, just to name a few. To not to forget their cult single ”Day’N'Night” from Kid Cudi, this remixed version climbed to the top of the worldwide charts in 20 different countries starting from Australia and ending with the Netherlands where the track is selected as the soundtrack videogame Midnight Club: Los Angeles…About a month ago during their United States tour which made them a must see just about everywhere in the states such as Denver, Toronto, going from New York to Seattle, to Los Angeles, to Miami and even much more….We will see what they will have to discuss about and what were their emotions or moments that they will never forget…Why don’t we discuss all of this in the next interview, strictly Crookers? Let’s start from scratch, your beginnings, where the most important spotlight stage was in England, particularly at the Fabric in London. How come this success came a little late in Italy?
They say that the Italians are a little out dated musically speaking…but sometimes nobody knows who’s the jackass or the smarts…so who do we have to care?
The remix of ”Day’N'Night” was the turning point of your guys success, what does that track have more than the others, especially trying to listening to it after a long period of time?
Most definitely the remix of ”Day’N'Night” had a big plus on the other tracks but it also we don’t do nothing for free and even though it was a remix we really didn’t make a profit out of it…on the other though it made our names throughout the world and that’s what we would like to thank for and of course Mr. ”Day’N'Night”, Kid Cudi.
Your hip hop style is very unique in your works, in particular in your opening album “Tons of Friends”, they are special guests such as Kelis, Pitbull, Will.i.Am, Kardinal Offisal but also italian hip hop artists such as D’Argen D’Amico, Fabri Fibra, can we say that you guys are sort of a crossover type? What was the musical influences and backgrounds that you feel really connected?
To tell you the truth, the cross-over style doesn’t really interest us and we never understood what it actually meant or we don’t have a clue how to answer this question. All we can say is that we are very connected to the old school rap, of the future jazz and of course what we do right now in the present.
What do you think of the Italian musical club scene, is their a particular artist that you like?
There are way too many cool people… It would be very hard by just writing them all down but they are not italian! No offense against anybody but we consider ourselves in that list of non-cool people.
In some sort of way you broke the barriers, your fanbase is fairly large, the question is, was it your guys prerogative to get attention to certain fanbase or this was created afterwards?
No, the fact is that we are hot, hot in the way where men love us and the ladies want us…
Is it true that when you guys make your music you are super focused on what you are doing, even producing 5 to 6 bits a day? Is it also true that you guys work separately so that at the end of your works you guys share and finalize your ideas?
Let’s say that we work separately for geographical reasons… that we are super focused like die hard, not our style. We are like two tugboats that pull big, big ships into port.
Does it make a difference for you guys to play at a club or at a festival? Does change your approach to your works, such as the fact of picking long tracks or short tracks?
Not really.
Can you tell us at least 4 tracks that you guys carry around at all times?
Our tracks are unique and that for we don’t really need to name none of them at all.
What is your advice to a young artist that really wants to be like you?
The same advice they told us when we were young, working really hard, trying to get better everyday and to listen as much music as you can. Also never listen to anybody’s advice on what kind of music you should do.
Plans for the future? New album, new releases?
We are finishing this project that we shared with Savage Skulss and other friends like Dr. Gonzo. It will be coming out soon on Southern Fried…our fans we’ll be really happy especially the ones that followed us ever since, because we decided to go on with club beats thanks to the collaboration with Dr. Gonzo.
