D. Carbone

Sat, 10 Mar 2012  /  Post a comment
The 44th Podcast of my weekly Podcast show Invite's Choice.

After having had one of his best friends on the show last week, this week it's time for D. Carbone who, like Ascion, lives in Berlin and is making a lot of name for himself.

He too is one of the people behind the very well received Repitch Label, which is a favourite among techno-enthousiasts and has a lot of awesome music stacked up for release later this year.

Some of those tracks have been released by now, one of which by D. Carbone himself that I play a lot in my own sets.

When listening to his productions and sets a clear influence hauling from the darker underground scene is immediately evident.

Berlin has played a huge role in D. Carbone's search for what he wanted to make and eventually lead to a particular sound he can now call his own.

D. Carbone has a clear vision on techno and takes a stand for it; something he wanted to showcase during his podcast for this week's Invite's Choice!

ABOUT//D.CARBONE

D. started to produce music in 2006 with his great friend Ascion they began a musical project that continues to grow still now. From Always he was fashinated by electronic music, the artist started his career with minimal sonority that was expressed in his first releases on labels like "Smallroom Music", "SCI + TEC," 8 Sided Dice "and many others. Davide was continually engaged in sound's finding that could express all of himself, made of deep sensation and industrial sonority.

His musical growth reaches its peak in the summer of 2010, when he moved in Berlin, D. found in this city a world where all belonged to him, where everything that surrounds it's underground and characterized by deep and industrial music. In this world, Davide could discover himself, finding all that he searched for long time in his life: dark and underground music that inspires him and connotes the most recent productions.

In this project of growing with his friend Ascion begin to mature an idea of founding own record label called "Repitch". It Enriched during his stay in Berlin, also with added of Shapednoise at a later time. Repitch could be defined as an experimentation of sounds that are beyond the canons of usual techno. he is a label based on noise, glitch, industrial and deep sound, strange beat and music that wants eliciting a new and deeper experience in the listener.

Repitch Not is only a label but it's also forthcoming project from D. Carbone & Ascion, this collaboration is way for express a new sonority from us characterized by Industrial Sonority with Ambient and dub shades!

Repitch is a really open-mind project that goes beyond music and embraces Visual Arts, Showcase and so on!

Davide is constantly evolving his sound by allowing himself to fall deeper into the musical rabbit hole. Ranging from minimal to deeply dubbed out industrial productions, he has become one of the most influential artists in the scene today...
Davide started his musical career in 2006 with great friend and soon to be Repitch collaborator, Ascion. Instantly they bonded, through their love of electronic music and their passion for life they continue to grow to this day. Davide's productions started to circulate through the techno community and soon he found his works on labels like Monoloc's Smallroom Music, Dubfire's SCI + TEC, Alan Fitzpatrick's 8 Sided Dice, Splinter Music's Hedgehog and of course yours truly Prosthetic Pressings...

D. Carbone one of the label owner of REPITCH presents his own label with interview and podcast for SMOKE MACHINE TAIPEI
1.Can you tell us about the idea behind this mix?
This mix is set up with idea to promote me and REPITCH firstly, so this set started with ambient sensation and proceeded in techno way with many of my best recent releases (like Repitch 000 and 001 my sleaze and nachtstroom) and my forthcoming like Repitch 001 and Dynamic Reflection…then I say this set evolving in really atmospheric and experimental techno by the way!Enjoy!

2.Tell us about your music background, how did you start to make music, Djing?…etc.
From I was very young every week I went to dance, after few times I started to buying vinyls of music that I like although in that period I didn't had turntable….then with some friends we had idea to make music, for fun for passion, and after few times we followed a course of Cubase (but only me and Ascion continued to producing)… After few time we changed our DAW in Ableton!
My music background turn around the electronic music, especially I'm really lover of old school music, Raw Techno, Acid and Dub! All are concentrate in techno way… but how I say, Techno is my life.

3.What's the concept behind Repitch?
The concept behind Repitch is really underground! We decided to open repitch only for real techno lovers…. Repitch is the perfect way for explain techno that we have in mind (First with 3 label owners and with few artists inside)… It has not style rules, all shades of techno and experimental.
Every tracks need to be unique in his genre, i think is really important! we really want an unique REPITCH style…
With the first EP 000 we received a really good feedback from the techno community, charted and played from many great artists… unbelievable my friend! We made it for introducing our label to Techno community…And results? the results were better than the expected! Repitch is not only our label but it is also the new collaboration by me & Ascion, It is a new way for explain a different echo from us, but I don't want to say more about (collaboration will be released on the next vinyl)…this is the beginning! You can listen the awesome remix from Mike Parker inside my set….Features is coming!

4.How did you and Ascion meet each other? and Shapenoise? How did you start the label?
I think Ascion is the best meeting of my life, after one year that we were friends quickly we given attention to music…In 2009 when we were "The Pitchers" we had the idea to opening a label, but we thought on it and and we realized that we were not yet ready, we needed to grow further….so we waited other two years and at beginning of this year we said now is time to open REPITCH! the style is quite mature (I think always a growing style but is quite mature for REPITCH)… then we known Shapednoise when we made a remix for him and in the last summer we went in berlin all together for 2 months… so at later time we decided to add also Shapednoise at Repitch project...

5.How does the dynamic work between the three of you?
I think the dynamic is perfect between us and all of us have an underground mind and all of us are techno lovers….but i think we don't have the same expression of techno and more important is that our three style fit at perfection….
in my opinion my techno want be discounting of old school in new technology in a new way in new rules, and I think it is expressed in my recent and forthcoming productions…. I want make a raw and dub techno with old touch, Shapednoise is more experimental techno and Ascion can be between me and Shaped! I think the Fusion of those three minds, of these 3 style creates REPITCH style!

6.What kind of music do you listen besides techno?
I'm not really fan of others styles at the moment, but anyway I listen others styles like chill out, dubstep, electronic ambient and so on!! (But it is a very little part of my music Background)

7.Any impressions about Asia's techno scene?
I think after Berlin the next country i need to be is an Asian City like Tokyo or others…I think the Asian scene is really good, also if few artists arrive in european ears, and it's really a sin for me… I'm fan of oriental culture and i think people have a different vision of the life and this set a different impact with the music they listen…They are happy with experimental sound and different types of techno.
(It is not the same in many places where people limited to follow the trends )… This allows Asian artists to explain every time an unique style, it is not copy of other artists and so on! I think so!

8.Future plans?
My Future plans are: finish my studies and go to live in Berlin, and than set up and working hard on Repitch!l... Repitch is and will be limited edition ever with no repress! I'm not interested become rich with it, I'm only interested leave a remembrance on the all techno lovers hearts….About me I hope to play more than now…But in the next months I have some dates like Resonance festival, Tresor and so on… I think are few in this moment but hope to grow up in this way!

9 How did you hear about Smokemachine Podcast?
Already known Smoke Machine Podcast, in the past I have been listened some like the Peter Van Hoesen, Xhin, Obtane, Subjected and so on…one month ago Chris Liebing Charted my track Untitled of REPITCH000, and two days after my friend Franco (Petstov) contacted me, so, after few times he asked me to make Smoke Machine Podcast! and I said awesome thanks for this chance....and than I want say again Thank you! This time we have from Italy one of the owners of Repitch label who made an incredible mix to us full of dark and heavy techno wich create a fantastic atmosphere. Enjoy the mix and read the interview to get to know D. Carbone
USQ: Tell us about D. CARBONE, Who is the person behind the decks?

In many case people think that the dj is only dj but not for me. I'm also a university student at faculty of psychology and now I'm working for finish my studies. Music is my real interest, I'm studying only for cultural baggage, I don't have interest to work as psychologist in future, my unique interest now is finish university and go to berlin for dedicate my life only to music!

USQ: What's the setup that you used to make the USQMIX 019?

I used a Macbook Pro with Traktor Pro2, NI Audio 8DJ and Allen & Heath Xone 42!.

USQ: We could check that you made a trip to BERLIN this year; Do you consider that BERLIN is the "TECHNO EPICENTER"?

Berlin Berlin Berlin! How i said…Berlin is Berlin, it's simply different… I think is the best city in Europe for quality of life… Here you can be free in all sense. Naples is good place but we have many many problems (I don't want be long on this things). Apart how you can live there (city is really cheap, many things are legal meantime in rest of Europe not is legal, there are uncountable different people from all state and so on…), i think Berlin has real Techno's music culture! The party there start but nobody know when will it finish (Ex. In July 30th i was in Berghain, Luke Slater made awesome set, played also my track on Repitch000, then Ben Klock played 11 hours with magic old school inside, he stopped after 10 hour, but nobody going out from the dancefloor and people were really much for Panorama Bar, and so Ben played other one hour, but where were people? All were in dancefloor, so Len Faki go down and start to play….The party never stop!). Then i want say that Napoli in the past was real epicenter of techno music but in my opinion we have lost it unfortunately, in the 90's Naples had a lot of artists that made rule and now these persons changed they own style for commercial business…Berlin now set the rules!

USQ: Tell us about REPITCH and what is the concept behind the project?

Thanks for giving me a possibility to speak about Repitch. It has inside it the concept of Techno culture, it is limited 300 copies with no-repress for 000… I'm a lover of underground scene and i would like Repitch represent the underground scene…We (Me and Ascion) started with idea to open "Repitch" many time ago (approximately 3 years ago)… We waited many times for completing our growing style's (the style always growing but i think now is quite mature) and to set up Repitch's style(In later time we added also Shapednoise to REPITCH crew)! Thus, i can say that the first release of Repitch called 000, because for us not is real starting but is better speak of presentation vinyl, so i want say that we release this vinyl for introducing "Repitch" and his music to the techno scene … After this presentation will begin a series (always limited) with special artwork signed Pasquale Ascione aka Ascion, but i don't want explain other about it, i want that will be a surprise for all artist that want have this series in them collection! Of course we have good artists and remixers on Entire series. (In July Chris Liebing Charted my Track Untitled out on Repitch 000).

USQ: How is the TECHNO SCENE in NAPLES and what is the listener’s perception about this techno style?

For me not really good, but is only an assertion of taste. In Naples artists have a different mode to explain techno than me, i think so! There are many good artist like Joseph Capriati and so on… But all of them have different vision of techno for me.. in the past i made a techno more similar to Napolitan techno, but now i don't think so... I'm in way of RAW! I think, my Techno is very different from other people of Naples and i can't feel my music totally inside this scene! (How i said at begin of this reply i don't want that this can seems like a criticism, it's just a taste opinion)

USQ: We have seen that you've been working with ASCION since a long time ago. How is the relationship with him and is he the mayor test when you make a new track?

Oh mate! Ascion is like a brother for me! We lived together in last four year , now Ascion finished his studies and he moved in Berlin, next year also i come there… Ascion is not only a major test, he is the only one tester of my demos (I don't like send my demos to other people)! About collaboration, you asked me in good time, few days ago we made a last track for completing the first EP of series, that will be released with new alias from me and Ascion… Also if we are really distant in this time, everytime we meet, we need to make a track!

USQ: We could see the D CARBONE'S sounds progress during your beginings like a producer with tracks such as Black Clock / Rende Deep in Eminor Records and many more. Now we can check a wonderfull relase in "Prosthetic Pressings" "Suicide EP, With Remixes of Ascion & Claudio PRC . How was the evolution to reach this Techno?

I'm producing music from 4 or 5 year… And i think all my past was at research of my own style… I'm really lover of old school and i think that my own style came from fusion of old school with new instruments and new gear… So, how i can say, i Try to keep alive the sensations of old school inside the new rules!.

USQ: Can you tell us a bit about your music background? and do you consider that this music style is an influence at the moment of creating your music?

The background of my music is represented from really few artist at moment like P.A.S. , Surgeon, Dehnert, Pacou, Klock and so on… They are all representatives of old school… I believe music need to be felt inside heart, music need to create an emotion inside everyone, and this emotion is different from person to person, from artist to artist. With this i want say that i feel this emotion in me when i listen artist like Surgeon, P.A.S. , Mills and so on. When i producing I need that my track evocate this emotions, and only if i feel this emotion i continue to work… I think working without inspirations, without emotions is stupid, because results aren't real expression of own art… Maybe, my idea is complicate to explain but i think all people that have felt this emotion for also one time in his own life, may understand me.

USQ: What are your plans for the end of 2011? (Records, Remixes, Dj-Sets, Live)

For Records i have REPITCH 000 , REPITCH 001 with Ascion, an Ep on Dynamic Reflection, one Remix on Driving Forces all of these are in vinyl! About dates, I have three gigs in Germany: Munster @ Club Favela, Stuttgart again @ Toy and one other at Tresor(Berlin) for Nachtstrom Night, one in Bulgaria (TBA), one at Resonance Festival(Naples)! About live i decided to stopping for few time and i'll restart to make new live when i have a couple of analog instruments for make it!

USQ: Where have you enjoyed more playing and why?

I think one month ago in Stuttgart at Toy, because people were amazing…I played really techno and people were happy, people totally felt in this music, people felt my same emotions!

USQ: Top 5 of best tracks ever for you?

You keep me in front an hard choice…(laughs) I think five is reduced number for defining best tracks of ever! I Say best tracks from five artists that i have in my heart!

Jeff Mills - Change of Life
Mike Dehnert - Dub [Fachwerk Records]
Planetary Assaults System - Surface Noise
Surgeon - Intro (Version II) [Tresor Records]
Pacou - Return [Cache Records]
