Biography of Dee McAuley | | | Real name / | Dee Montero | | Moniker(s) / | Montero |
Born and raised in Belfast, Dee’s DJ career began when he won the Vestax mixing championships at age 17. His drive, talent and love for the music enabled him to secure his first residency at the infamous Network club in Belfast where he warmed-up for the likes of Dave Seaman, Parks & Wilson and Brandon Block. This is where Dee cut his teeth and really found his unique sound during those three years.
In 2000, when the Network club sadly shut its doors, Dee packed his bags and headed for the White Isle – Ibiza. Thinking he would only last three weeks of the season he not only survived his first, but also returned for the following five seasons. Dee continued to show his talent thus supporting huge main room acts such as Tiesto and Armin Van Burrin every Tuesday at Amnesia whilst shining through on the terrace creating his own night playing his deeper, techy sound.
On Dee’s return to Belfast after the summer of 2001 his unique ability to entertain like-minded fans and DJ’s became apparent when he teamed up with studio partner Graeme Laverty to create their first track ‘Pearl’ under the pseudonym Midtone. After handing out a few CDRs to the big guns on the island (including Sasha who was such a fan that he cut his own vinyl dubplate) the track quickly got snapped up by Duty Free recordings for their first official release.
Not one to be pigeon-holed Dee worked on developing his sound further in the studio and explored the more percussive and deeper side of house music, thus Montero was born. This was to be used as a platform for Dee and Graeme to release more groove based tech house music, which is where their hearts lie.
The musical transition proved to be successful and in 2004 Renaissance signed Montero with their ‘Brazilia e.p, which had huge support from Deep Dish, Steve Lawler & Sander Kleinenberg (who played it live on Radio One from Glastonbury).
Again, success hit in 2005 with Dee securing a residency at the infamous Café Mambo and Montero’s follow-up ‘Captain Hook’ hitting the Number 1 spot in DJ Mag’s Hype Chart, Beatport and DJ Downloads where it still remains in the all-time Top 10.
Since then Dee has toured for Renaissance at clubs such as Redlight in Paris, The Cross in London, Trilogy in Dubai and various festivals around eastern Europe including Belgrade (to 25,000 people), Kiev and Minsk. Taking time out in the studio, Montero have produced and remixed for Dave Seaman’s Audio Therapy, Max Graham’s Re*brand and Ricky Stone’s Flat Belly Recordings. In 2008 their monster track ‘Hard-Drive’ featured on Global Undergrounds 2009 compilation with major support from James Zabiela and Nic Fancuilli.
Currently based in Asia, Dee continues his residency with Renaissance in Hong Kong and has recently set up a new venture called ‘Headroom’ which aims to bring cutting-edge music to the city where he will support heavy weights such as Satoshi Tomiie and Dave Seaman throughout 2009. Montero’s latest tracks ‘Cause & Effect’ and ‘AOL’ have both been riding high on the download charts which goes to prove his consistency in the studio.
