Deepak Sharma

Biography of Deepak Sharma

For the past decade, New York City artist Deepak Sharma has been quietly building a sterling reputation for quality American as a DJ, producer, promoter, and owner of Hidden Records – one of the premier techno labels in the US. A deep passion for music, connecting with people, and a love for life continue to motivate Sharma as his momentum grows.

Sharma began as a promoter in 2001 and looking back he recalls the one particular night opened the door for him as an artist, “I was booking Fabric resident’s Craig Richards and Lee Burridge as Tyrant at his Wednesday night soiree at a lounge in Brooklyn called Boogaloo, the night was a resounding success, and lead to my being asked to release a mix compilation reflective of my music and vibe of the venue.”

Boogaloo. Brooklyn. 3:23pm was released in late 2004 with music from producers that weren’t as well known as they are today and received international acclaim with reviews in all of the leading dance music publication. Big Shot Magazine called it “… some of the most pristine minimal techno we've heard in ages. This is mandatory late-night/morning after listening. Not since Terry Francis' ‘Architecture’ series has a mix compilation explored the realm of tech-house so well." The compilation opened the doors for Sharma to begin touring internationally as a DJ.

A constant touring schedule led naturally to production, after the release of Boogaloo. Brooklyn. 3:23, Sharma first met what was to become his longstanding production partner, Dieter Krause, who also produces under the moniker Laplaceausoleil and happened to have a track on the compilation. It wasn’t long before the two began to work on tracks together, leading to their eventual partnership, which has truly blossomed over the past five years with releases on My Favorite Robot, Blaq, Regular, and Subtrak among others.

In 2006, Sharma started Hidden Recordings to serve as an outlet for the duo’s work. Since then, Hidden Recordings has provided a wide range of techno to hundreds of DJs and fans. The label’s sound ranges from deep techno to atmospheric chill-out with quirky, groovy bass lines and has been played in big room gigs, festivals, smaller lounges, and early morning terraces. The following year, Sharma and Krause beat out established publishing groups and produced music for Singapore's Ogilvy & Mather advertising agency and their client, Heineken Global establishing them as artists on the rise.

Since then, the press has embraced Deepak Sharma, his label, and his vision as an artist with ongoing coverage in Resident Advisor, AOL Music's Spinner.com, as well as XLR8R, DJ Times (cover story), Time Out New York, Mixmag, Ibiza Voice, Trax, De:Bug and Raveline (Germany). Hidden Recordings has licensed music to respected UK label Four-Twenty for their Music02 mix compilation and recently to NRK for the Seth Troxler mixed compilation The Lab.

The marketplace has also supported his endeavors, in December 2008 the label’s sixth release – Karri O’s “Ajaton” - peaked as the number one track on Kompakt’s download site. In 2010, Sharma + Krause’s EP “The Great Lawn” was a major breakthrough for the label, while the huge back-to-back hits of Sharma + Krause’s “Wolkenreise” and M.A.D.A. + Plankton’s “Antiz” have transformed the label in to a sought-after, high-in-demand internationally recognized techno powerhouse that have fans asking for more and like-minded artists lining up to be a part of the label's future.

Currently, Deepak Sharma has been active on the techno podcast circuit with recent DJ mix offerings for Ibiza Voice, Projekt Intl, and Noice, bringing him thousands of new fans. He has also been actively gigging at a time when performing has fallen off noticeably in the US, making stops in 2011 at major festivals such as Electric Zoo, BPM Festival, and Movement as well as his own Rough + Tumble nights going off deep into the night, owning the closing slot. Sharma has also played for big promoters such as BLK|MRKT membership and Verboten in New York and is versatile enough for the main stage as well as the after hours lounge. The label has also been delivering a consistent flow of high quality originals every few months with choice remix packages that are highly anticipated upon release.

For the past ten years, Deepak Sharma has established a solid foundation built on hard work and dedication to good music and as we head in to the second decade of the 21st Century that toil is starting to pay off for Sharma as he flowers in to one of the boldest voices in the American techno scene and is definitely one artist to watch.
