Biography of Elijah and Skilliam | | | Real name / | Elijah, Skilliam |
Forming a friendship through a mutual appreciation of grime music that soon turned into a scrupulous and avant-garde approach to the genre’s output, Elijah and Skilliam have quickly established a reputation for themselves within the underground movement. With a Rinse FM residency spanning two years to date and special guests including heavyweights such as Kode 9, Skepta, P Money and Trim.
The duo have also become regulars on the renowned FWD night line-ups with amazing and uncompromising sets. Considered the new heroes of the grime game with a real eye for the way the UK bass music movement is evolving, Elijah and Skilliam have become celebrated selectors “lodged at the very epicentre of the pulse” - Fabric London.??What’s key about Elijah and Skilliam’s sets is the sheer amount of digging for new material they do, and their constant willingness to play tunes from new, often relatively unknown grime producers over more fashionable artists. It is this investigative instinct that led them to launch the Butterz imprint, a year old label that has unleashed material from Terror Danjah, Swindle, Royal T, Trim, TRC and more. Highlights of the label so far are releasing S-X's cross genre classic 'Woooo Riddim' and P Money's 'Boo You' which have broken out a lot further than the scene they were originally made for. Alongside releasing MP3s and vinyl (a rarity in Grime today) they have extended the brand into merchandise that has the cult fans representing wherever they perform. You won't be able to miss one of their 'Black & Yellow Butterz' Tees in a club.
While their sets retain the high-octane, aggressive fire you’d expect from grime, they stay away from the hype, war, and clashing that have long served as the scene’s Achilles’ heel. Thanks to this high-concentration music, low-concentration drama approach, the pair have become the first grime DJs to break into Europe without an MC, playing parties in Holland, Spain, Germany, Switzerland and Czech Republic to name only a few. Launching their Butterz club takeovers in 2011 has seen them curate line ups of talent from the label alongside established heavyweights from the broad spectrum of bass music for venues like Fabric & Cable in London, Thekla in Bristol, Life in Brighton and Paradiso in Amsterdam.
With an edition of Rinse's legendary compilation series out now, the Butterz movement will continue to rise long into 2012 and beyond. |
