Biography of Frogrocket | | | Real name / | Alex Jackson |
5 years of clubbing in Manchester and beyond has refined his tastes and broadened his influences. Big name DJs at Sankeys Soap were a must (Darren Emerson, Carl Craig, Chemical Bros, Sasha,) but also quirkier, more underground nights at The Electric Chair and Aficionado maintained the interest in deeper dancefloors, with DJs and artists such as Chris Duckenfield, Kerri Chandler and The Unabombers.
Manchester clubbing institution Kindergarten @ The Attic proved to be the perfect melting pot of these 2 different worlds - quality, established bookings in an intimate venue, always with an eye for something slightly different to the mainstream. Frustrated with the repetitious nature of current Manchester clubbing, the Kindergarten night can be cited as a direct influence for setting up his own club night in May 2007...
A chance meeting at Sankeys in Feb 07 with 2 like-minded tech-heads Lawrence Court and Tim Driver led to a collective dedicated to bringing Manchester some tasty underground beats but with something a little bit different to offer. Long-term friend Tom Lonsborough was brought in to add a different slant on the 4/4 beat, with a view to bringing in his 4-man live electronic cross-over group Dieter & The Gadabouts. The 4 launched Sound Minority with a free party at Scubar basement in May 07, then built up a small but dedicated following over the summer at Joshua Brooks' basement.
Oct 07 saw the realisation of the Sound Minority idea - quality underground house, breaks and techno, alongside live electronic music. Dieter & The Gadabouts made their live debut to rapturous response and a packed club - live guitar, cello, sax and keyboard, tied together by drum pads and ableton, with soaring vocals finishing the stunning combo. Sound Minority now had a new direction to pursue - live electronic acts, complimented by the diverse styles mixed by the residents...
As such a Frogrocket set can take you in a number of different directions; from the deep and trippy Carl Craig remixes to the analogue pounding of Redshape, from Gui Boratto's warm, melodic techno-pop to Oliver Huntemann's dark, electro-tinged minimalism (and of course a nod to those original deep-house influences). He maintains a healthy knowledge of new and current artists but isn't averse to dropping in an older release (or for that matter a well-known track during peak-time sets).
The philosophy is relatively simple: if the tune is good and has some depth to it then it's good to be played, regardless of how long ago it came out, whether it's out/in fashion or who else played it first. This lack of pretension means that whilst a Frogrocket set can be melodic and dreamy, deep and driving or hard and pounding, it's always fun and gets the people involved.
2008 has seen Frogrocket delve into the murky world of production for the first time, under his own name and in collaboration with Chemical Tom as Automtaon. 2009 promises more production and DJing and hopefully a first release. Stay tuned...
