Biography of Genuine Guy | | | Real name / | Scott Pearsall |
Genuine Guy is an English born DJ/producer/video artist based in Berlin, Germany. From his earliest days
co-running the Soho based club 'One Size Fits All' along with Max Tundra, to his ongoing collaborations with
the 20jazzfunkgreats music blog, and more recently, his inventive productions for the Tigerbass label in
Berlin (which he also co-runs, and is resident at the club night of the same name), his name has always
been synonymous with off-kilter yet accessible music.
As a young man, Genuine Guy (aka Scott Pearsall) was involved in all sorts of club nights, short-lived bands
and other musical projects. It wasn't until he moved to Brighton and became involved with 20jazzfunkgreats
that he really came into his element, producing wildly eclectic DJ mixes, writing for them and being a regular
fixture at their club night.
It was only natural then, that he should start producing his own tracks. After only a couple of months of
producing he was signed to Kid606's Tigerbass records, a more dance-floor focused off shoot of legendary
electronic label Tigerbeat6. His first EP for the label, 'Bad People Get Laid' saw him being asked play to all
across the UK and Europe, sharing the stage with acts as diverse as Kap Bambino and Drop the Lime. The
EP was a manic blend of US 'ghetto' dance styles (Booty House, Baltimore etc.) combined with the scuzzy
energy and aesthetic of his lo-fi punk roots. The title track quickly became an underground hit with fans of
both styles alike, and resulted in him being commissioned to remix the likes of Comanechi, Metronomy and
Kid606 himself.
A relocation to London gave him ideas for a new direction. Still something of an outsider of the more
fashionable 'electro' scene there, he began to notice it dividing into disparate scenes. The two most noticable
being disco and heavy bass. A lover of both, he started to experiment with ways of musically re-uniting them.
Taking the production, grooves and melodies of disco, and applying the modulating basslines of harder
styles, he came up with a sound that he decided to label 'Disco Wobble', a fresh but skewed take on disco
house. New EP 'Jealous Swingers' is already being hailed as one of the most original and inventive dance
records of 2009, and bringing with it, lighter, more melodic and party focused dj sets, it is set to carve him a
new position as one of dance music's up and coming stars.
The future for GG will see a European tour with label-mates Dolby Anol and Blende, a string of EP's and 2010 will bring a
live show that will further explore his new sound (and vision). It will also see him reunite with his old friends
at 20jazzfunkgreats, and a new, less club focused side project, so keep em peeled! |
