To explain illich’s musical style it is necessary to understand the roots of his musical upbringing. Since early age his influences varies from diverse rock sources such as Nine Inch Nails, The Cure & Depeche Mode. This heavily rooted rock n’ roll foundation inevitably introduced him to the production of artists such as: Adam Freeland, Sasha, James Zabiela, Richie Hawtin, Aphex Twin, James Holden amongst others.
One of illich’s musical ethos is that “there is always really good music for all genres and rally bad music for all genres as well. The poignant factor for a DJ is to understand where to find the unique, high quality music and be able to mix all kind of genres the best way possible in a set.” Illich’s sets are an eclectic combination of different kind of rhythms ranging from: House, Minimal House, Minimal Techno, Tech House, Breakbeats, Techno, Electro, Ambient and Rock.
Additionally, illich possesses a design background from his Masters of Architecture from Columbia University. It is this platform that allowed him to be involved with the design of such important nightclub venues in New York City such as Cielo and Pacha NYC.
It is also because of his architectural background why he understand so well the relationship between sound and space. Illich’s DJ sets are characterized with a high quality and understanding of the right EQ levels according to the performance space, and in relationship to the sound system and density of crowd. His style is also characterized by a passion for all electronic / extraterrestrial sounds, and everything that is off-kilter…
This was highlighted in 2006 when illich was chosen as one of the 10 finalists of the international DJ competition “Exp3riments in Sound.” The competition measured the level of uniqueness a mix could achieve by the use of all of the latest DJ technologies available. Presently, illich is one of the resident DJ’s of the Techtonic Division crew. Techtonic Division is a collective of creative designers / DJ’s interested in the intersections between Architecture, Music & Digital Technologies. While in the development of all of Techtonic Division’s events in NYC, illich Mujica along with Luis Padron and Azadi have coined one of the best electronic dance music parties in New York City: “Techtonics.” Since the beginnings of Techtonics illich has had the opportunity to share DJ performance time with such talented DJ’s / producers like: Guy Gerber (Cocoon Recordings), Derek Plaslaiko (Spectral), Plexus (M_NUS), Insideout (Clink), Dennis Rodgers (Robots), K-Swing (Marine Parade), DJ Kai (Yoshitoshi), amongst others.
Illich’s future is filled of interesting opportunities between his own upcoming productions, his own space designs that cater to electronic music and his DJ sets.
