Self confessed music freak, Jack! Who? (aka Iain Kirk) has been engulfed in electronic music from the age of 8 with music being somewhat part of the family blood. His Grandfather was a teacher of music and used to create his own compositions in a Sunderland school, his brother the prolific Lone Wolf known for his unique dubstep-esque releases and worldwide renound scratching exploits on his label NozL Recordings.
Huge early influences to his interests were artists like Aphex Twin, The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Boards Of Canada to more recently Switch, Stephan Bodzin, Eric Prydz, Radio Slave, Vitalic, DJ Hell and everything in between. His heart is now set around Techno music in all it’s glorious forms Deep, Dark, Edgy, Pounding, Quirky, Euphoric, Progressive…
Iain has played at many club nights in the North-East (full gig listing on his MySpace) and in 2007 was the Creator/Resident of By Royal Appointment aka 'B.R.A.' which focused on Techno/Electro/Minimal. They showcased a wide variety of DJ styles, constantly keeping it fresh and interesting, providing a platform for many local and national artists gaining recognition in DJMag, Mixmag and local newspapers.
A huge highlight for him was hosting Room 2 at LUBE: in Newcastle on the same bill as one of his heroes, Thomas Schumacher along with top artists Perc and Luca Bacchetti.
B.R.A. guests have included, Rui Da Silva (Kismet), Mistress De Funk (PeepShow), Warbgasm (Hypercolour), HiJack (Jack Union), People Get Real (Wax:On), Bigger Than Jesus (Excentric), Suade (Adapted Vinyl), Lisa Kristiina (Lo Motion), IDC (Corsair Records), Scot Nicolson (Error_), John Hepplewhite (Push It), David Kenney (Audio Parallax Music), Dave Nicholson & Steve Clarke (CityWestRecords).
After 2.5 years of regular events, a break was needed and the curtain was drawn on that chapter of his musical career. 2010 saw the emergence of an idea thought up in 2009, to release mixes of local artists and promoting/scouting worldwide talent. The podcast 'Death Techno' was born early March 2010 and is steadily picking up an avid following featuring mixes from some huge international producers and DJs like Erphun (Brood Audio), Acid Circus | Raíz (Droid Behaviour), Miss Sunshine (Monocline) amongst others...
Success from this venture has led to hosting The Gallery at super club Es Paradis in Ibiza with Newcastle friends Calcutta & Grenade featuring Dillinja and Logistics.
Future plans are that Iain wishes to grow the brand further by starting DT as a digital label, releasing his own works and to launch 'Life Techno' for the lighter, funkier forms of electronic music that appeal to him.
A typical set from Jack! Who? contains hypnotic beginnings, rhythmic middles and powerful endings while trying to create a musical experience for the listener that captivates their mind and feet in the same instance. |
