Biography of Jay Phonic | | | Real name / | Jan Schmidli |
the first try to do own music was around 1994, after starting playing the guitar in 1991, i've did a few jamsessions and a single gig with a student-band.
1994 was the year which changed a lot of my musical interest. a new style of music came up in west-europe, a music called "techno"
i left rock music behind a bought 2 old turntables and my frist vinyl records.
in 1998 i came in contact with Michael, a DJ with the same idea of electronic music as me. 1999 we started our first "studio-room"
from 1999 to 2002 we played a lot of the old house music records, mixed them up with the harder and darker flavor of detroit/chicago-techno.
in 2003 we became the chance to play as resident DJ's in a small club called Subway.
2003 was also the year where Peter and Toni joined our DJ-Crew and together with Flemming (our socalled manager) we founded "Dustgroove.com"
2003 was the year where i bought my first synthesizers, controllers and stuff like this. then i started to produce my own music
2005 Michael and me started a live project called "the Boostbrothers", first with 2 Korg Grooveboxes and a Laptop with Ableton live, after quiet a while we left the Laptop at home and played only with hardware equipment on stage.
in 2007 and 2008 we made a own "lovemobile-truck" for the well known Openair Party in Switzerland called "Streetparade" which is since 1993 every year the biggest Techno-Music Festival in Switzerland
in 2009, also during Streetparade, Michael and me played our last liveact gig on a boat on the lake zurich.
so in the second half of 2009 i build up a new solo liveperformance and played a few very funny gigs
all of those experiences also left their footprints in my musical understanding as a DJ, that's why i still play a mix of groovin' house beats, paired with some influences of minimal techno, abstract electronica, and old school techno. sometimes calm and deep, and sometimes groovin as hell ;-)
