Johnwaynes have been around for a considerable time, and their musical output has gone around the world, both geographically as well as aesthetically. From their first releases, up to now, they have produced under the same guise, a widely diverse body of work, from simple and minimalist acid house, to full-on orchestra oriented classics, with the occasional drift into the more elegant territories of boogie and disco-funk. From Japan's Mule Electronique, to the ominous and legendary Compost, and London's now seminal Dissident, amongst many other outputs, Johnwaynes's DJ Jepe and António Bastos have had a prolific 4 year run, from the onset of their recording career.
All through 2009, the Waynes felt a growing distance from the reality of their own home country, and took notice of Groovement's strong nacional-only artist roster and decided to do a special track. The result was the deep, super-groovy, and efficient piece of political mellow house of "Falling Leaves", that borrows the message of one of Minister Farrakhan's most controversial speeches on economic dominance, and lays it against a comfortable, rhodes laden, boogie house instrumental, that reminds us of early KDJ releases or of Trus'Me's first Prime Numbers work. More than just a groove, a track that states a position and makes a stand.
Then came the remix. Humberto "Social Disco Club" Matias managed to be one of the few portuguese names to break through, internationally. He quickly took a pole position in the post-nu-disco scene, with a considerable amount of music being released through many a well regarded label, and was the man in charge for the job. The result was a melt-down of the original elements into an amazingly simple, yet surprisingly hypnotic, almost "beatdown" groove that slowly grows into a feel-good dancefloor killer for the more musically aware crowd. After Ka§par's futuristic "Music Life" 12", it's the perfect follow up... it display Groovement's pluralistic and confident attitude that good music needn't be of one genre alone, and that there is much to gain from being open minded and eclectic as a label. Another solid and dj-friendly 12" from Portugal's finest that is sure to reside in a lot of sawy dj's record bags and laptops."
