Biography of Karl S. Berg | | | Real name / | Karel Boutens | | Moniker(s) / | Therm, Charly M., KSB Juggler, Karl S. Berg |
Karl S. Berg was born in May 2006 as the minimal alter ego of Therm at the occasion of Bal Minimal at the infamous Decadance club in Ghent. At that moment, he was not unfamiliar with Belgium’s coolest club, since from 2003 till 2005 he had been resident of the monthly Essence parties.
For over 8 years now, Karl has been steering the wheels as well as fiddling the knobs in his own home studio. In 2004, under his Therm moniker, Karl won a remix contest which delivered him a release on US label Mile High Recordings. At that time, however, he was no further than mere production infancy. So for the next few years he spent about all his time in polishing up his production skills.
Around that time, next to producing solo, Karl started collaborating with Peter Novak, one of Belgium’s most renowned dj’s of the past ten years who has been resident in some of the finest Belgian clubs, as well as at the infamous and successful E-Motionz party-series. Together with Peter, his hard work came to a point of fruition and Peter, ambitious as he was, founded his own imprint E-Motionz Recordings with N.E.W.S. (home to labels such as Music Man, Aroma, Legato, Curle, Dogtown etc.). In 2007 and under different monikers, Karl released four records on E-Motionz, two of which with Peter as Novak & Therm. The same year, Karl fell into the prizes of yet another remix contest, which saw his remix of Groove Rebels' Breakpoint being released in digital format.
Early in 2008, the sudden death of Peter made an abrupt end to their years of collaboration and the close friendship that resulted from it. All of the sudden, Karl and his monikers had to take care of themselves and the things he and Peter had started together. Yet having to take things more in his own hands does not make Karl afraid. It's a challenge, but also an opportunity to keep alive the thought of Peter even more than it already is. |
