Biography of Kev Obrien | | | Moniker(s) / | Stranjjur |
If Sinatra was correct and his legendary cliché that states “if you make it here, you’ll make it anywhere” is true; then New York's Kev Obrien is quite possibly on the verge of something big. After many years entrenched in Florida’s legandary rave and club scene, Kev made his new residence in New York City known in a big way in 2009, when he and Billy Disciple launched Stranjjur NYC; a series of u...nderground parties that was to focus on introducing house music’s brightest new talent to the Big Apple.
Over the next two years, Stranjjur NYC would go on to become a household name within the New York club and underground circuits; introducing top-tier talent to The City that Never Sleeps. Artists such as Carlo Lio, Milton Jackson, Spencer Parker, MANIK, Pezzner, Till von Sein, Kruse & Nuernberg, Alex Niggemann and many others made their big debuts in New York under the Stranjjur banner. After enjoying success in the events scene, the next logical step for Kev and Stranjjur as a whole was to use the same A&R and creative principals that made the events a success toward creating an even larger platform for the artists…and so, as of this summer, The Stranjjur Imprint – a fully-fledged vinyl and digital record label – was born.
The label’s first release has already created a big stir worldwide, well before the official release date. Lula Circus’ “Miami Vices” EP has been getting big spins by top-jocks such as Maya Jane Coles, who included it on her highly-acclaimed BBC Radio Essential Mix in July. With artists such as Pezzner, MANIK and Kris Wadsworth already signed to the label, it’s a safe bet to say that Stranjjur is on the verge of creating big waves across the industry.
On the production front, Kev has also been making big waves; with many of his solo productions and collaborations with studio partner Chris Luzz reaching the charts on Beatport and being caned and charted by a wide range of top-billing DJs, such as Jamie Jones, John Digweed, Nic Fanciulli, Laurent Garnier, and Ben Watt – just to name a few. His productions - as well as his live sets – are known for leaning toward a distinctly deep and sexy groove, with splashes of funk and soul peppered on top.
What does the future hold for Kev Obrien and Stranjjur? Only time will tell; but if ‘Ol Blue Eyes was right, then the journey has merely just begun, and the future is looking very Stranjj, indeed. |
