Always amazing German producer Motor City Drum Ensemble (aka Danilo Plessow) has got a super heavy & mega wonky new remix turning Darkstar's psych-pop song 'A Day's Pay for a Day's Work' into warehouse-quaking dark dance (on Warp Records) .
Motor City Drum Ensemble has the uncanny ability to make his tracks sound like an authority. From the first hiss and thud of the kick, his atmosphere is instantly recognizable as the one that makes you stop in the middle of a set and scream at someone, anyone, to tell you what's playing, even if you're not sure if you like it. “A Day's Work For A Day's Pay†isn't his track, it's Darkstar's, but the remix leaves no trace of the original's wounded piano ballad. It feels like a dig at the title's hollow platitude: mechanical repetition and processed humanity, dragged across a parched landscape at speeds of up to 120 bpm. Anxious acid house trills and echoing synth transmissions buzz like radioactive office lights, playing a danse macabre with the choking, industrial atmosphere. If you've ever felt like you were drowning at an awful job, it's what you heard rattling around in your head on your worst mornings. MCDE's remix will appear on 01484, with two more remixes of the same track form Darkstar themselves.
Following the first edition of the series with Nina Kraviz earlier this year, we head out on tour with Danilo Plessow, AKA Motor City Drum Ensemble. Check out this trailer ahead of the film's full release early next week.
Motor City Drum Ensemble recorded his set from Secret Sundaze Go Bang! August 2012 for the fashion site Coggles. They have previously showcased music content from the likes of Four Tet and now MCDE has kindly donated this special slice of Summer from the event at Roundhouse earlier this year. Enjoy!
Motor City Drum Ensemble is easily one of the most interesting voices to emerge in contemporary house music over the last few years.A series of killer singles – particularly the ‘Raw Cuts’ series, released on his own MCDE imprint and many outstanding remixes– quickly propelled Plessow into a fabled position in the house landscape. But he shines equally as a selector, as his contribution to the DJ Kicks series back in 2011 amply showed.

Danilo Plessow – aka Motor City Drum Ensemble – is easily one of the most interesting voices to emerge in contemporary house music over the last few years.
A series of killer singles between 2007 and 2009 – particularly the ‘Raw Cuts’ series, released on his own MCDE imprint – quickly propelled Plessow into a fabled position in the house landscape.
But he shines equally as a selector, as his contribution to the DJ Kicks series back in 2011 amply showed. As such, FACT are pretty chuffed to present a 1 hour 45 minute mix from the man himself, which you can download below.
The mix was recorded live at the SunceBeat 3 festival which took place in Tisno, Croatia late last month, and saw Plessow rubbing shoulders with the likes of Francois K and DJ Harvey in the sun.
Talking about the mix, the producer said said: “Suncebeat was a really nice experience, the beach stage, the people and of course the setting at the sea were all part of the magic. Now I’m looking forward to Secretsundaze, the line-up is sick and I’m sure its going to be a great party.”
Plessow is referring to this weekend’s Secretsundaze Go Bang! mini-festival, at which he will play alongside Matthew Herbert, Four Tet, Levon Vincent and more. The festival takes place at the Roundhouse and Proud Camden this Sunday, August 26; further info and tickets can be found here.
