Some stories from the attic?
In the 80s Mijk van Dijk started out as a bass player in school funk bands, was part of German proto „discourse pop“ band „Jetzt!“ and later discovered House music,
In the 90s, Mijk van Dijk recorded some of the first techno records out of Berlin and helped to pave the way for our music as a journalist, producer and DJ from Day One. He has been producing some of the hardest and fastest techno tunes ever with DJ Tanith and on his own with his project „LoopZone“. He has been a pioneer for a new sound called „Trance“ back in 1992 when he worked with Cosmic Baby on the probably first Trance/ Chillout-Compilation ever: „Tranceformed From Beyond“ on MFS-Records. In those days he wrote tunes like Marmion’s „Schoeneberg“ and Microglobe’s „High On Hope“, „Environ-mentality“ and „All Our Colours“, that became classics of Techno. In the lyrics of his first artist album „Afreuropamericasiaustralica“ he focussed on issues like the preservation of the environment, global warming, frictions between cultural groups and religions, well, basically all the issues, we are talking about right now. This ground-breaking album has just be re-released digitally on Mijk’s first own digital label environ-mental recordings in a „Director’s Cut-Edition“.
Mijk’s main label in the 90s was legendary German record label Superstition, where his biggest hit to date „Schoeneberg“ under the project name „Marmion“ was released as catalogue number 004 in 1993. He also wrote the final chapter of this Hamburg based imprint by mixing the bastard techno mix CD „Decade“, the final Superstition release in 2003.??
Teamwork?
Not only on his album „Teamwork“: Mijk always liked to co-produce with other artists as diverse as DJ Hell, Claude Young, Tanith, Takkyu Ishino, Thomas Schuhmacher, DJ Rok, Toby Izui, Namito, Rob Acid, Tom Wax, Asem Shama and Martin Eyerer. His Marmion-classic „Schoeneberg“ was produced together with Marcos Lopez. ?
After a break of 12 years he started working again with DJ Hell on music productions (like Hell’s critically acclaimed „Teufelswerk“ album) as well as mix compilations (like “Misch Masch”) and fashion show soundtracks (like Michalsky and Joop).
Apart from his own productions there's the string of remixes that Mijk did for artists like Moby, Denki Groove, GTO, Frankie Bones, Humate, Emmanuel Top, Arpeggiators, Sonic Animation, to name but a few.??
2010?
The next decade will see the next step in Mijk’s career. Embracing the new digital world in producing, DJing and releasing music. Mijk set up 2 new labels:
environ-mental recordings for taking his non-digital past into the realm of today’s music consumption society and nuFunkFiles aka nuFF for taking his first love Funk Music into the future. His new project mijkfunk is ready, set, go for a string of releases to define his vision of NuFunk. A lot of music by Mijk will be dedicated to NuFunk in the next years, be it as mijkfunk or as The Chaenge, together with Wareika-singer Florian Schirmacher.
And still House and Techno are big with Mijk.
Besides his House releases of Cologne based label BluFin he just released the „Feel Unreal-EP“ under the name „mijktech“ on Australian label Hypnotic Room with amazing remixes by some of Japan’s finest producers such as Shin Nishimura, DJ Wada and Talashi Watanabe.
The perfect conclusion to his past before the future ist he compilation „Past Perfect – the Best of Mijk van Dijk“ which wraps his greatest hits from 1992 to 2010 on one exciting compilation, released through Media Factory exclusively in Japan.
