Like hangovers, labels come and labels go. One week’s must have is next week’s must not, in a world fully loaded with hyperbole it’s seems just as important to spin a story as it is a record. Whilst we could go on some sort of extended written monologue about how this label is different, about how we care about music and about this is our dream like some PR-fed X-Factor contestant. That would be both really boring and completely pointless, more hype and no knickers.
Hissy Fit is the brainchild of the Moustache Mamas, part Berlin, part London composed of a US East-Coast sensibility and a UK North East sense of humour. It’s a vehicle to be able to work with the artists and release the music they love, to give something physical (yes all releases will be pressed on vinyl) to the people that spend all that time dancing when the girls are DJing. The Mamas have then built up a reputation of being Grade-A party starters across Europe, playing at the rawest of parties, and outshining some of the boys in the 'boys club'. Their approach to DJing is mirrored in their approach to starting Hissy Fit, the girls are serious about their music even if the music itself doesn’t need to be serious.
For its first release Hissy Fit drops (if you’ll excuse the pun) Leeds Based ‘Death On The Balcony’. This year they’ve been cosying up to the likes of Soul Clap and the Wolf and Lamb posse, as well as being booked to play all over the damn place causing hissy fits of epic (yet joyous) proportions.
The EP contains three originals, and kicks off with ‘Gimme that Stuff’ that's slo-mo in the best possible way, it’s a dark and brooding call to arms, the perfect early night weapon with more chug than a steam train whilst never disappearing down a long dark tunnel. 'Every Time' is a synth-laced house jammer that brings in the clap & the punch with just the right 'Oomph' for the kiddies on the floor.
The EP also debuts the Mama’s first ever piece of production work. Their track, '21 & Lewis' stylistically, perfectly, represents the direction the ladies have been moving in over the last year or so. They take their tune and sleaze it to within an inch of its dirty little life. It’s straight up, proper (as people seem inclined to call it these days) house music. It’s intentions being pretty obvious, get down or get out.
Hissy Fit then is one release old, waving a sole middle finger in the air whilst awaiting number two.

Our infrequent mix series passed the 20th edition milestone with that fella from the Foals so we decided it was time for a change – out go the cosmic prisms and animals floating in space and in comes a new clean design which will look equally stush on your iPhone. We also noted that it’s been a decidedly male affair to date with only one half of Lovers & Gamblers repping the fairer sex to date.
The balance eeks towards a state of redress with London and Berlin dwelling DJ duo the Moustache Mamas taking care of duties for the 21st edition. Those who reside in either city and attend club nights on the reg will no doubt have shaken booty to a Moo Mamas set at some point over the past few years. I vaguely recall having a very enjoyable evening soundtracked by them in Bardens Boudoir circa 2008, and more recently they’ve been tearing a new hole in the Berlin nightlife with their Hott Boxx night.
With the growing success of that still ringing in their ears like an evening spent too close to a monitor speaker and the news that they are about to launch a new record label, now seemed the perfect time to call on them to drop a mix as welll as conducting an interview that stretched from London to Berlin via California.
