Ben Gomori speaks with N-Type about his first time...
…remember hearing music.

My uncle owned a musical instrument shop which made Violins and guitars. I remember first hearing a lot of music through him and my cousin. My other uncle was more in to popular music and used to record me tapes of radio one etc. That got me into buying tapes and records. I always wanted to interact with what I was listening to so I tried to learn Guitar and piano but it wasn’t for me, I was to young and restless I think. I wish I had stuck at piano as I use it in music production and it would have been nice to be able to play and write music. When I discovered decks, I was like rah!! This is me!!!

…fell in love with dance music.

Always liked dance music even if it was chart shit at first, the first underground dance music I was exposed to was in middle school eg. Hardcore and Jungle. I just remember walkmans, tapepacks, mcing, baggy jeans and school discos.

…set foot in a club.

Rah first set foot in a club, probably the local club in Redhill called Millioniares (what a dive!) It’s a joke of a place!

…was blown away by a DJ

I think it was probably DJ Hype, Mixing was sick but scratching was gangsta!! I loved his sets and the ganja cru sound!

…got trashed

errrrm well depends on what kind and how trashed you mean?

…went to a festival

The first festival I went to was recently, in the last few years since ive been pro DJ. Im trying to think what one was first the last few years are a bit of a blur. Im sure I done one in Germany first in some castle on an island near Berlin. Now ive done them all and I love them!!!!

…I tried to mix two records together

Round my mates house, clanger bangers as you would expect. When I got my own decks I mixed the same two records together about a hundred times before I got the mix perfect that was the way I learnt to beat match, then I changed one of the records and tried mixing and I understood what it sounded like to beat match tight. Then I learnt the ins and outs and the technical shit.

…DJed to an audience

The first crowd I played to were birthday parties… They were quite sick though! Big marquee party in a mansion grounds, a big church hall with loads of kids beaned up and bolloxed on hooch lol, boat parties off temple pier etc they was a laugh!

…DJed abroad

I remember MCing in a bar in tennerife on a lads holiday! Lol! Then I remember getting booked early days for Freek Camp in Berlin, Bun Zero Belgium, Denmark, Poland, Switzerland mostly Europe.

…fucked up during a set

Just the usual DJ shit in the early days, picked up the needle off the wrong deck and tried to style it out as a reload, got massivly bolloxed and done a couple of clangs etc etc, but recently I done a good one… I was playing in Sheffield at Valve Soundsystem night I had just finished my set and the dance was having it a good 1500 people. One of the MC’s said yo your mate is at the front, so I went over to the front of the stage to say hello. I leaned down the crowd started reaching up so I went to put my foot on what I thought was a speaker but it was a clean drop! I stacked it off the front of the stage on to some birds at the front and my left leg was still up on the stage so I couldn’t get back up! One of the MC had to come and pull me off the crowd and back up on stage. I looked at the crowd and bare people was like hand over their mouth in shock, then I realised I had ripped my jeans from the crotch half way down my leg and my red tartan boxer shorts (you know the boxers your mum buys you for Christmas that are comfortable but look fucking terrible but you wear them anyways because you don’t think anyone’s gonna see them!) Popped out for all to see! I just hope the leng farder didn’t make an appearance to! I was like “help meeeeeee nooooooooo!!!” For the next few months I did panic searches on youtube for N-Type falls of stage and gets his old boy out.. luckly nothing yet!!

…made a track

My first tune I ever made was called ‘the world melts’ looooool! yes I was blatantly off my trolley when I made that one!! Lol! If I could find it in my Dubplate graveyard we would all probably have a good giggle. Then I made a tune called Square off which got signed to Southside Dubstars and then nearly every tune I made after that found a home on wax which was a good sign but some of the mix downs are weasel-ish!
