Wed, 22 Feb 2012  /  Post a commentMany years ago I chopped up loops from Dave Holland's fantastic What Goes Around to use live with the Expansions electronic jazz project.
I revisited those loops the other day, messed around a little more and decided Mr. Holland had to meet Palmer Brown from Blaze's classic My Beat.
I know, there are probably 967 remixes already of My Beat but I hope this brings something still fresh.
Oh, and there needs to be more dance tunes in 11/4 time.

It’s getting cold out there: “It’s going to be the coldest week in Europe since 1985?, they said.
I thought we would need an “ice-proof” mixtape, and for not getting wrong, my search started where cold weather is a daily “affair” and not just a weird happening: Stockolm.
Sweden’s capital is the place where this mixtape was recorded last week (it’ a live mix, so don’t blame us for the audio quality). On the decks there’s one of Scandinavia’s most extraordinary producers: Peter Major aka Opolopo, definitely “on the front line of the boogie resurgence brigade” (cit. Charlie from Mixtape Riot).
With “Mutants”, released last month on Tokyo Dawn Records, he “finally opened the doors to his private zoo of mutant pets. Exposed to sonic radiation and mutagenic chemicals, their DNA sequences have been seriously funkafied for ultimate effectiveness. Some of these creatures you might have already encountered. Others were let out of quarantine especially for this release. And some are about to become your new best friends.”
So now you have the perfect weather with the perfect music, press play and get ready for a space-time travel back to the 80's.

And if you grab this, you have to buy a track from one of my albums on Tokyo Dawn Records. If you don't, a baby hippopotamus will die. Please don't kill the hippo. Do the right thing:

Say hello to Opolopo's mutants! With this release, mad funk scientist Opolopo finally opens the doors to his private zoo of mutant pets. Exposed to sonic radiation and mutagenic chemicals, their DNA sequences have been seriously funkafied for ultimate effectiveness. Some of these creatures you might have already encountered. Others were let out of quarantine especially for this release. And some are about to become your new best friends.
The fearless vocalists taking part in these sonically advanced experiments in groove mutation include the first lady of modern funk, Amalia, R&B multitalent Colonel Red, Tupac songwriter Erik Rico, Mathew Herbert collaborator Eska, Grammy-nominee Gregory Porter, French soul superstar Sly Johnson, hip hop hall of famer Talib Kweli, spoken word queen Ursula Rucker and many others. Time to get your mutant on!

Thu, 20 Oct 2011  /  Post a commentActual Proof is the new four-four alter ego of Opolopo, a name you might have come across through his releases on Tokyo Dawn, Swedish Brandy or Especial. On this 12” Opolopo takes himself on another musical journey and explores house music, both the dirty and Detroit influenced sound, as well as the more electronic and techy inspired.
Review:
This great value five-tracker sees former Swedish Brandy producer Opolopo launch a new moniker, Actual Proof. Musically, it offers a slightly more varied diet than his previous work, variously touching on deep house futurism (the rather quite spellbinding "Huff & Puff"), bubbling, sub-aquatic deepness (two excellent mixes of future late night staple "Hubble") and gritty, stripped-back disco/deep house fusion (two dubby versions of lead cut "The Grit"). As usual, it's all immaculately produced, offering the sort of far-sighted but groove-centred deepness that always impresses dancefloors. This boy will go places.
