In the early days of dance music, the DJ often played a much humbler role in the events they were involved with. There were no pyrotechnics, no complicated lighting schemes, no towering platforms for them to stand on, no projection mapping, hell the DJ booth wasn’t even always in plain sight, limiting their visibility to the dancers. What was left was the MUSIC, which had the power to make or break the entire event.

It’s important to note that while many events have become spectacles designed to please the eyes as much as the ears, DJ Shadow’s recent tour proved the former superfluous even in modern times. Shadow played with just two turntables, a mixer, and a lone drum machine when I saw him last December. Nothing else. Cake frosting is always nice, but stripping things back to just the music is still viable recipe to a successful event, as long as the music is good. Boston DJ Patrick Barry is a full embodiment of Shadow’s formula as well, despite the differences in the music they both play.

Barry is a no-nonsense DJ who is all about the selection and not the sugar coating. Good music, played on two decks and a mixer. That is exactly what we have here in the podcast mix he recorded for BBD. As a former resident for Re:Set at the Phoenix Landing, Portsmouth NH’s Red Door club, as well as the now-defunct Midweek Techno night (that preceded Re:Set), Barry boasts experience working many a humble dancefloor.

If you park at Anthony's or one of the surrounding lots just walk past the Whiskey Priest and then take an immediate left before the World Trade Center onto the Commonwealth Pier. The boat is halfway down the pier. Take the T to Bay State Cruise Company via the Silver Line - Take the subway to South Station and transfer to the Silver Line (the Silver Line also travels through the South End/Back Bay). The Silver Line departs approximately every five minutes to the World Trade Center stop and the trip is just a few minutes. Ample outdoor parking is available starting at $9

All boats depart from Rowes Wharf in Downtown Boston at 6:30 PM and return by 10:00 PM. Everyone 21 years of age or older is welcome with a valid I.D. $20 per person grants admission to cruise party as well as free admission to post party celebration at the Phoenix Landing. Tickets may be purchased in advance in-person or by phone with any major credit or debit card at the Phoenix Landing or Hugh O'Neills. Tickets purchased over the phone may be picked up at the boat the day of the event.
