Biography of Rikki Newton | |
For over 10 years, Rikki Newton has built a reputation in the Brisbane DJ scene as being a leading name in all things house and techno. Whether he's on warm up duty for one of the many internationals he has supported over the years, or mixing it up with his local comrades, Rikki never fails to disappoint in bringing variety, intensity and excitement to the dancefloor.
During a 2 year stint in the London, Rikki was first influenced by his fornightly attendance at Ben Watt's now legendary Lazy Dog club nights. Upon his return to Australia, he developed his skills and earned regular bookings at Brisbane venues such as Family, Empire and Press Club. For 5 years Rikki held a weekly Saturday night residency at Family night club's infamous Uncle Bar where he played alongside some of the biggest underground acts such as Jimpster, Ben Watt, Carl Craig and Derrick Carter to name a few. His versatility soon caught the attention of festival promoters and was rewarded with slots on the stages of Good Vibrations, Summafielddayze, We Love Sounds and Stereosonic.
Some of Rikki's most memorable gigs have played out both locally and overseas. He has been a regular support at the Brisbane leg of the Berlin Sessions tour (Solomun, Stimming, Ame and Isoleé) as well as being a regular guest for Drop, Logic and Auditree events. Rikki has also featured at Sydney institutions, Spice and SASH, played his first international gigs in Prague and Brno in the Czech Republic in 2009 and most recently played Berlin and Salerno, Italy in 2012.
Not content with his already lengthy resumé, Rikki launched the Subtrakt parties in 2007. His aim was to showcase some of the best names in underground house and techno in the intimate setting of Brisbane’s no. 1 underground club, Barsoma. Six years on Subtrakt has hosted some of the best parties Brisbane has seen, bringing artists such as Lee Burridge, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Steve Bug, Prosumer, Charles Webster and Smallpeople to our shores. With Subtrakt co-promoter Adam Swain, Rikki has since created the unique Subtrakt Incognito boat parties, hosting acts such as Innervisions head honcho, Dixon.
As Subtrakt continues to gain momentum year by year, watch this space for even bigger and better things from Rikki as he continues to bring us new and unexpected sounds from the house and techno world. |
