Italian Pirupa is on a hot run of form… his last outing for Nick Curly’s Cecille was one of the most charted tracks of the month over on respected website Resident Advisor, so it’s no wonder he’s been snapped up for this new EP on Riva Starr’s Snatch following outings on Defected, Cècille, Viva Music, Saved
Pirupa - Snatch! Records

‘Money’ is warm, churning tech house at its best. There’s a muffled sense of euphoria in the synths and plenty of funk from start to finish. It’s a floor filling tune for sure, and so too is ‘Get My Love’ with its female vocal, slinky tech percussion and wobbling synth lines.

‘Break Mambo’ is a more broken beat, with thuddy kicks patting out a rhythm as crisp percussion jiggles about above. It’s unhinged, with some Snatch! Ready horns and instrumentation colouring the stop-start groove at the mid-point.

This is a well rounded package offering something for all sorts of dancefloors at all times of day. So too is it a another winning effort from the on form Pirupa…

Tracklist

Money
Get My Love
Break Mambo

Future Underground brings together the biggest underground club cuts provided by two of clubland's hottest figures, Pete Tong and Riva Starr, released in two mixes on dance music's premier compilation label, Defected.

Future Underground is your guide to the music that will dominate the finest dancefloors for the rest of 2011 and beyond, featuring tracks and remixes from current stars including Maya Jane Coles, Deniz Kurtel, The Japanese Popstars and Reboot, plus past masters such as N.E.R.D (album exclusive), Cajmere, Steve Bug and Santos.

Pete Tong needs little introduction. 2011 is a milestone year for electronic music’s foremost curator. He’s just announced a host of activity for this year, ranging from his Miami Pool Party (with Hawtin, Joris Voorn, Riva Starr and others) to a new Ibiza concept and beyond. His constant touring, production work, remixes, music supervision, film scoring, and a weekly Radio 1 show, all ensure he’s arguably the busiest man in dance.

With an impressive body of work for key dance labels such as Made 2 Play, Get Physical, Dirtybird and Southern Fried; Riva Starr’s diverse but distinctive sound has helped him notch up a fan-base that ranges from Annie Mac to Pete Tong, Carl Cox to DJ Sneak, and Groove Armada to Sven Vath. His remixes include The Gossip, Usher, Plan B, Dennis Ferrer and Estelle. His artist album “If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade” (Made 2 Play) was released to critical acclaim in 2010, followed neatly by his Miami Defected compilation. He’s the proud owner of Snatch records.

Neapolitan by birth, Londoner by adoption Stephen Miele aka Riva Starr is one of the most popular and respected talents in the world, a proud Italian who was a star of the Miami WMC, as to sign two compilations for Defected Records.
Hello Riva, Welcome on Soundwall !
The first question is obvious but obligatory: you’re always very nice relationship with your web fans, what is important today internet for a dj/producer?

Very important, but more ‘important’ is to have something to say and not simply copy other things that work. If you have something to say, the web makes you ’say… if you do not, the web ignore you… very democratic that’s why i like it!

Why did you decide to leave Naples, one of the leading cities for electronic music, to move to London? Were afraid that your sound was not “understand” or you simply wanted to abseil down a different reality?

Well not “afraid” I was pretty sure because I worked for 15 years in Italy and no one ever gave me a chance ‘to step “out of the sow” if you know what i mean… I have enough to England three years to build a project from scratch and this makes you understand about the conditions in which many young talents in Italy are forced to work. Coping with everyday reality ‘Italian is not’ easy for those who make ‘music.

Have you found differences between the approach of artists, promoters, local between Italy and out?

Well each country has its way of working and its kind of audience, Italy has some great clubs and a deep respect for tradition and clubbing… it’s always a great pleasure to return to play here.

Your productions and your remixes are now of global success, your versatility is recognizable in all your work, where does your “magic touch”, which artists and genres are part of your cultural background?

I always heard lots of music, since I was in diapers (well of course I started with Daitarn 3, Jeeg robot Grendizer) from rock to soul to hip hop to 80’s electro, r’n'b, breaks and even the music world etc etc … so really my influences range much.
Compared to my eclecticism I think it is due precisely to this .. i’m not the kind of DJ / producer who is fixed on a precise style sounds with precise … I like fun in the studio and in clubs and do it my way … hope you do not mind .. maybe I’ll not be the myth of the purists but I never had great respect for those who think with blinders!

Your label Snatch! is producing good work, I personally loved “Upside” by David Keno, and recently came out your bootleg of “Splendido Splendente” by Donatella Rettore, why did you want to put his hands to a “national popular” track?

Because I liked both the loop I had created… if I had said that it wasn’t Rettore’s track, few people would have noticed then I used a part of the piece quite creative resonating parts. And indeed it worked… We fired in half world and is finished on dozens of compilations, becoming one of the pieces of the summer club.

Why “Riva Starr”?

Why not?

Having played almost everywhere, you can make comparisons. What about Italy, clubbing has made the leap of quality or are we still seen internationally as a destination where making money?

Well definitely in Italy most of the time most artists take more money than from other parts… This is perhaps because clubs are more big and numerous that in many other parts… and entrance tickets are fairly high at times… There are actually groups and promoters very interesting and forward-looking and when I find myself talking to my foreign colleagues there are always positive comments on evenings in Italy… not to mention the comments about food

What are your future plans?

Well, continue to push my label with releases and remixes very strong of Tapesh, Pirupa, Santos, Steve Mac, etc. … Then I started already ‘to knock’ ideas for my new album and certainly lighthouse’ songs club most individuals club meanwhile labels more’ underground as 100% pure, Dirtybird, Made To Play, etc. …

Finally, a classic question, what advice from your younger colleagues who dream of being able to make their passion a profession?

Work hard and do things they believe without trying to pander to the tastes of others.

Thanks for your time, see you soon in Rome!

YO!

"Just sitting here at Ibiza Airport after playing a slamming set at the Radio 1 weekender with Annie Mac, (which was UN-believable btw); I really wanted to take the time out to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who has supported me over the last year." Riva Starr.
