“We want to try and create our sound source from a vintage palette, and then take it into something very high tech, we recorded some of these first ideas at Jochem’s studio in Rotterdam. I feel like we are only scratching the surface and I am so excited to really dig deep with this idea".
Get ready for a new exciting collaborative project on Electric Deluxe!
“Workshops” is a new experimental series of releases by Phil Kieran and Jochem Paap (aka Speedy J). The idea behind this project is to explore the recording techniques used in the middle of the 20th century and dating right back to the mid 1950’s. Famous inspirational places like ‘BBC Radiophonic Workshops’ in England and ‘Philips Lab’ in Holland have seen some of the most innovative production techniques, experimenting with the first use of stereo, modular synths, found sounds and reel to reel tapes. The end result was always something space age and promisingly futuristic and still to this day fresh sounding, crisp and exciting.
Phil Kieran and Jochem Paap have decided to use this inspiration to effortlessly accomplish marrying the past, present and future in an innovative mix of old ideas with new. As Phil Kieran explains: “We want to try and create our sound source from a vintage palette, and then take it into something very high tech, we recorded some of these first ideas at Jochem’s studio in Rotterdam. I feel like we are only scratching the surface and I am so excited to really dig deep with this idea".
The first Issue of ‘Workshops Vol.1 EP’ consist of three flowing tracks with an inimitable organic and atmospheric appeal. A1: ‚Paint and Chemicals Dept. Dub’ is the most dance floor focused of the bunch. A dense and hypnotic bass drum blended with sublime layers of echoing soundscapes. B1: ‚Wood and Organic Dept’ starts off with a pendular bass which melts with drippy spaced out sounds to create a blissful audiocity through vintage sounds and time. B2: ‚Wood and Organic Dept. Dub’ the heavy cousin of B1 which leads back to the dancefloor with its raw industrial frequency build-ups and an uncompromising massive bass drum.

Speedy J has been smashing out the releases of late and With the Shoegaze EP Speedy J has created another incredible body of work. A snapshot of a process, a form that emerges without intention – Half dreaming and half awake - shaping a relentlessly pulsing tracks, vibrant and effortlessly contemporary. The vinyl A side Shoegaze (Speedy J out of Focus Dub) takes you right into the core of Speedy J’s massive production wizardry. Amorphous drone sounds, dusty yet smooth and intimate, create a monumental space, while a pulsing sub-bass is luring you into the groove.
The vinyl B side Shoegaze (Edits Select Dub) is up for serious dance floor damage.?A compressed yet heavy bass constantly rolling and pumping from below and the ethereal dub sounds create an amazing flowing driven and hypnotic beast of a track, which is already tearing up the dance floors world wide. Digitally Shoegaze EP goes beyond with two more bonus tracks & tools. Shoegaze (Edit Select Reviset) is starting off more ambient and atmospheric than the B side brother but gets a grip on you soon. Merciless pulsing bass and echoing drone sounds never cease to leave the dance floor out of focus. At last but not least Speedy J’s Shoegaze (Tool) the distilled bones of Shoegaze.
A piece achieving the seamless connection between usability and artistry. Speedy J’s Shoegaze EP truly creates a nu gaze on modern Techno and the open ended dialogue between man and machine.

Electric Deluxe Night @ the Bravo
Sleeping on saturday night is not an option this year, our friends of Electric Deluxe are gonna keep you on your feet in the Bravo..
EDLX will flood the sound system with plenty bass and techno beats. Not too shabby: Techno pioneers Speedy J and Chris Liebing will be joining up once again as Collabs, to perform one of their well known collaborative sets. Also present will be Sandwell District, currently the hottest techno label from Berlin represented by the illustrious DJ’s Function and Regis. And the dark, atmospheric and energetic beats from Glasgow’s Gary Beck will complete the line-up making this night a perfect representation of contemporary techno.
Collabs – Speedy J & Chris Liebing
Two techno heavy weights for the price of one! Speedy J and Chris Liebing have been at the forefront of techno for decades as individuals, and together they regularly team up as Collabs. Buried behind a huge array of equipment, these gents merge DJ-ing with live elements, program drum machines on the fly, creating a mash of beats bass and energy spanning the entire spectrum of techno, deep dark and long! Brace yourself, they’ll be pushing the crowd to all corners of the arena. Unique, subversive and epic!
Gary Beck
Gary is from Scotland, you know, the place where men wear skirts, where the weather is grim and the mountains are rugged, and where the whisky flows. Gary doesn’t care though, he wears trousers, and his music is as solid and straight forward as the man himself. Deep dark and punchy with a twist of lemon and some sparkles. The perfect cocktail to brew a good party, which is exactly what Gary is used to doing from here to Tokyo and back to Scotland on his way to world fame. Next stop: Lowlands!
Sandwell District
Techno is a multicolored creature, and there are no better ambassadors to prove this than Sandwell District. Representing the hippest underground techno label of the moment Sandwell District operate in various formations. The project revolves around the elusive DJs Function and Regis, who’s names are both whispered in awe or shouted out loud frantically. Totally legit though, as both are total techno warriors, who have been pushing their thing to the max for the last decade at a consistent level. Taking you on a journey from dark ambient to high energy techno these boys will rock your world. Their recent album Feed Forward proves once again that they are on a roll in the studio, and that’s going to be no different at Lowlands!

COLLABS (SPEEDY J & CHRIS LIEBING)

As you know we will be doing a Collabs set at the Melkweg on Queensnight, so we thought it would be fun to have a jam together in Rotterdam to make sure we're prepared!
...
We rented the Heidegger club to have a session on WEDNESDAY the 27th of APRIL, to warm up for Queensnight. We have no idea what we're gonna do, it may be messy or turn out to be a legendary set, or something in between!
So if you want to witness us finding our groove click below to see how you can join us.

Electric Deluxe is proud to present with its first release ‘Area EP’ in 2011 the new artist project by Giorgio Gigli and Perc ‘Endless’. Already established producers in their own right, the collaboratio of Perc & Giorgio Gigli as ‘Endless’ takes the distinctive sound of each producer and creates something far more than a simple fusion, forming a sound that is alien to either producer’s solo work. ‘Endless’ is inspired by the more hypnotic and psychedelic forms of techno.
The middle ground where drone & ambient music meets techno. Giorgio Gigli being directly influenced by his love of Brian Eno, Byetone and Robert Henke whilst Perc seeking for sounds of Irdial and Ifach when they started to work on the pool of sounds. Each Track built upon the classic rhythms of early analogue drum machines, opening up the minimalistic aesthetic that runs through Giorgio’s tracks whilst smoothing some of the abrasive qualities that make Perc’s percussive storms so recognizable.
The ‘Area’ EP is starting off with ‘SG8’ a crafted bass drum formed and fused with hypnotic drones creating a deep helical groove.‘00165’ on the heavy side a track shifting and shaping in a never ceased to please tension in sound and space.‘EHDC’ impresses with its sublime phonic density and tight bass drum sounds. True to the Electric Deluxe philosophy each of the Tracks is accompanied with a Tool giving digital DJs advanced possibilities of improvisation; easy to blend yet with distinct features. With further tracks still to emerge no one is sure where this collaboration will head next, but one clue may lie in their soon to be unleashed performances showcasing a fusing of live and dj-ing, analogue and digital. With both producers have already proven themselves as accomplished djs, their forthcoming performances, like their tracks will be something to savour. On his own Giorgio has two EPs on Zooloft plus a remix for Mikrowave coming soon. Whereas Perc is about to release his debut album for Perc Trax.

Queensnight in Amsterdam will offer a rare opportunity to indulge in a seven hour session of Collabs, during the 11th edition of Electric Deluxe Presents. Host and co-organiser Speedy J will do an all nighter together with Chris Liebing, shaking the foundations of the Max in the famous Amsterdam club Melkweg. Simian Mobile Disco, Marcel Fengler and Lucy will host the second room.
Germany brings a strong delegation to the orange colored city of Amsterdam, with both Lucy and Berghain-resident Marcel Fengler checking in at the Queensday edition of Electric Deluxe Presents. Four years down the line the techno party around Speedy J’s recordlabel of the same name has grown to a true powerhouse. Almost every edition sold out months in advance.
Despite the name Lucy is not a lady in pink but the alias of Luca Mortellaro from Berlin, where he runs the Stroboscopic Artefacts label. A platform that illuminates pioneering electronic music. Lucy’s DJ sets are techno layered with deep dub and textured with lucid IDM.
Though he tends to keep a pretty low profile, Marcel Fengler is rightly considered as one of the finest techno DJs currently in operation. At Berlin venues Berghain and Arena, and at underground parties around Europe, his sets have a refined, atmospheric quality that betrays impeccable taste and years spent behind the decks. At the legendary Berghain club Fengler currently pummels the shadows on a monthly basis.
Simian Mobile Disco (SMD) will prove they don’t have to bring ten cases of vintage synthesizers to throw a party. With their dj-sets James Ford and Jas Shaw often release more energy than a Russian powerstation. Their recent series of Delicacies singles prove the Brittish duo still have a big and pumping techno heart.
EDL-host Speedy J likes long sets. Especially with Chris Liebing on his side. Their Collabs-sessions are legendary but rare. For EDL they duo will do a unique all nighter, seven hours long. With a hybrid of a live gig and a d-set the duo know how to get the walls of any club dripping with sweat.
Estroe opens the queensnight edition in De Melkweg. Her warm and elegant style is tailor made for that. Last year she released her debut album Elemental Assets. A record on which she combined melodic techno with fluent beats and clever arrangements.
For over four years Electric Deluxe Presents brings the best in Dutch techno parties. With clever line ups, a fantastic sound system and the best crowd they brought the genre to a whole new level. Previous editions sold out fast and this queensnight edition won’t be an exception to that rule.

Birthdays. You need to celebrate them in style. That’s why Jeff Mills who will drop by on the 10th anniversary of Electric Deluxe Presents in the Amsterdam Melkweg. The rest of the line up is equally promising. What to think of Sandwell District, Echologist and regular host Speedy J?
“ You can make sure we will give Mills a warm welcome”, DJ and Electric Deluxe-host Speedy J confirms. The Dutchman is very pleased with the inclusion of the Detroit pioneer of techno, who announced to shake the Melkweg foundations with a dark futuristic techno set.Together with Carl Craig, Jeff Mills is one of the few producers from the motorcity who never ceased renewing himself. Last spring he released the worlds first hybrid cd, playable in both a cd-player and on a turntable. But Mills is best known for his energetic dj-sets. By many Mills is seen as one of the best techno-dj’s in the world.
Sandwell District is another name which should be written in capitals when talking techno. The groundbreaking singles on their Berlin based label consistently found their way into DJ cases of countless international DJs. Besides that, Regis and Function (the men behind Sandwell District) always make an impression behind their mixing desks. During EDL#10 the duo will play a hybrid set of relentless techno.
Brendon Moeller was born in South Africa but live in New York nowadays. He uses various monnickers, Echologist being one of the more interesting. Expect techno soaked in dub, a bit along the lines of Rhythm & Sound, Pole and Deepspace presents Echochord. Bottomless basslines, perpetual echoes, and a kick drum that will punch you in the stommach when you least expect it. “We will do a jam session in De Melkweg”, Speedy J reveals. “This winter I will release a single by Brendon on my label Electric Deluxe. There is a lot of common ground between our recent records.”
The line up is completed by Joey Daniel from Rotterdam and the Amsterdam-based underground dj Jeff Rushin. The latter is affiliated with the On & On parties in the Amsterdam docklands. Daniel has been a steady and reliable force since the early days of Electric Deluxe Presents. A dj who understands perfectly how to warm up a crowd for a great party.
