Falty DL "St Marks" (Cosmin TRG Remix) [Rush Hour]
It seemed like an age that the What People Play site was dangling the carrot with this one before it was released...I think it was up there on pre-order for about 3months, tempting me like a well groomed poodle to a sexed up Bangkok street dog... I couldn't wait any longer and bought it on wax...Such a good track, everything that got me into electronic music in the first place is at work here - an effortless mix of dubby techno sounds, pounding scissor beats over a luscious groove - bang up my alley so to speak... Rush Hour never seem to put a foot wrong in my book!
Efdemin "Secrets Of Shoeshine" [Dial]
Efdemin's 'Chicago' is one of my albums of the year so far... It's hard to pick a favourite cut overall as the album tells such a good story over all of the tracks... but, I've been hammering 'Secrets of Shoeshine' a lot at all of my DJ gigs over the summer, in some really unassuming places too. It travels from - dark, chin scratching techno (heads up people at the back), complete with cloudy pad sounds, stabs and field recording warmth - to super stripped down house groover all in the space of whats seems like 6 very short minutes... It's always a pleasure to have him rocking our festival, Freerotation year on year too... Great track!
Anthony Shakir "Dub In Fuzztone" [Black Dog]
This isn't brand new and 'hotter than your Dad's sneakers in 1983', but it's an absolute killer groove... No computer involved here that's for sure... Just upfront machines working in sync with a perfect dragging swing throughout. Dirty, rough and ready samples, pulling back and forth over 909 drums. Every sound complimenting one another over the whole track. Mr Shakir is a true genius / legend / unsung hero of epic proportions, and this track just scratches the surface. It's been great to see some of his classic cuts getting repressed and re released recently!
