Valentino Kanzyani is a founding father of Slovenian techno, and has been involved in the country’s dance scene since the mid 1990s. A celebrated DJ first and foremost, Valentino built a solid reputation for himself whilst he was resident spinner of Ambasada Gavioli, one of Slovenia’s most famous clubs. His fame grew when he started spinning on three turntables as standard.
Joining forces with fellow countryman and techno champion Umek, Valentino saw his first release in 1999 under the moniker Recycled Loops. Due to the success of their joint EPs, Valentino Kanzyani and Umek set up Recycled Loops as a record label, which further helped establish Valentino as a major player in Eastern Europe’s techno scene. A number of world tours, festival appearances and big club gigs followed.
Whilst Valentino’s sound has evolved over the years, he is committed to protecting the art of the DJ with real integrity. Valentino set up his label Jesus Loved You in 2005, for instance, just as digital downloading was becoming the main dissemination channel for the music industry. Instead of joining the trend, Valentino decided to release his label’s music mainly on vinyl as a way to support the true original format of the DJ. And it is his love for vinyl that has seen him flourish today, to become one of most respected underground vinyl DJs around.
You can find similar credibility in Valentino’s Ibiza-based party project, Next Wave. Set up in 2011 as a way to support the less commercial side of club music on the island, the Next Wave parties have become a resounding success in 2012. The cream of underground house and techno DJs have played for Valentino at Next Wave including many of Romania’s new breed of vinyl DJs, and occasionally, masters of the scene like Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano have played extended sets at Next Wave.
This year, Kanzyani produced a tribute to American soul and jazz poet Gil Scott-Heron, who passed away in 2011. He also began releasing a series of EPs on Cadenza in the build up to his debut artist album ‘Love & Gratitude’. The album showcases Valentino Kanzyani’s underground house vision, and so far two 'Love & Gratitude' EPs have been released on Cadenza. The releases on Cadenza also represent something of a new chapter in Valentino Kanzyani’s career – the Slovenian DJ and producer has now joined Cadenza’s booking agency.
Thu, 23 Aug 2012 / Post a commentBack in April, Slovenia’s Valentino Kanzyani dropped the first half of a two part underground house EP on Cadenza, titled ‘Love & Gratitude EP1’. It was his debut release on Luciano’s label, and was dark and funky for the most part, with the majority of the four tracks’ energy coming from percussion and raw beats (Kanzyani is currently working on an album for Cadenza, which will contain mainly new and unreleased tracks).
‘Love & Gratitude EP2’ is more heady and hypnotic. Throbbing beats and relentless kick drums drive the rhythms forward, whilst swirling synthesizers and experimental techno soundscapes diffuse the grooves, creating contrast and tonal changes. If anything, the gentle melodies and subtle musicality of Kanzyani’s three new original tracks here (the fourth track is a dub edit of the last EP’s El Circulo De La Vida cut) create a kind of dancefloor psycheism, where the mind moves in a different spatial plane to the feet, encouraging you to drift off into alternate dimensions.
The first track ‘Mirvan’ is the heaviest cut on the EP, and has a tension and vibe similar to the raw rhythms that Berghain residents Ben Klock or Marcel Dettmann might play at the Berlin techno temple. When some pads fade in around the 2:30 mark, you can sense Kanzyani’s desires to coerce you into a dreamlike state. The sounds are infinite and all pervasive, like outer space, forever expanding beyond the reaches of any known logic or meaning. The beats are drowned out at points by the ever-growing black hole of sound, however the drumming is reliable and constant, like an engine that never stutters.
The second track ‘Chanta Lopez’ is more housey, with a tangible bassline and more swing in the groove. Loose claps on alternating delay patterns keep the tension high in the first part of the track, before a metallic, machine-like synth cranks into gear. Unlike ‘Mirvan’, the synth has a recognizable melody and moves with purpose. At times, the synth combinations almost turn into an acoustic guitar-like moment in the track’s only breakdown, and the resulting drop brings a welcome change in bassline pace. This is a very modern house track, and the quiet optimism of ‘Chanta Lopez’ suggests a new dawn - a light at the end of the dark tunnel - like waking up on a Tuesday morning to find a cool afterparty happening in your living room.
The third track on the EP, ‘Une Noche En Paraiso’, begins with a nonsensical series of random drum patterns, as if the producer was clicking through all of the possible drum sounds in search of the perfect one and accidentally recorded all of his beat auditions onto the track. A clicky drum groove, funky and syncopated, gets dirtier as a growling bassline is added, before Kanzyani works in some un-bridled synthesizers. As the synths grow in stature, they become floaty and magical, like a panpipe fairy leading you down a path. More orchestral sounds then join the mix, which give the track a feeling not too far away from classical music, which is odd considering the repetitive techy drums. The sense of grandeur that the melody creates, quickly dissipates as Kanzyani brings the track back to reductionist glitchy house for the remainder of its time, and in the end, ‘Une Noche En Paraiso’ is like one quick toe dip into the sublime.
The final track on the EP is a special dub version of ‘El Circulo De La Vida’, which appeared on ‘Love & Gratitude EP1’. Without the original’s weird Shamanic Spanish conversation running over the track, the cut’s beautiful and serene melody is allowed to take center stage.

Sat, 12 May 2012 / Post a commentSlovenian techno protagonist Valentino Kanzyani shares his underground house vision on his debut release for Cadenza, titled Love & Gratitude EP1 (out 30 April on Cadenza).
As this EP shows, Kanzyani is an astute creator of grooves that have deep percussive roots and an unconventional raw energy. All four tracks on Love & Gratitude have a free spirit - there are no set drum patterns or genres to lock on to. The dance music just flows, magnetically, towards an unknown space of Kanzyani's design.
For instance the EP's first track Old School Romance, on which he collaborated on with Ian F., is a wriggly, dubby tech house track. It slowly worms its way into your heart and feet with warm Detroit pads, and a fidgety bass groove. It hints at a possible future explosion of light and energy, but it never quite gets that far. Instead it ducks and dives, hiding in the shadows, choosing to build tension elegantly.
El Circulo De La Vida is a magical trip of live electronics. With a percussion section built from an odd assortment of bells, live hand drums, and strange clanging instruments, the rhythm is animated and imperfect. The bass beneath is equally disjointed and unsystematic: sometimes it rolls sexily, at other times it just murmurs.
The track is led by a melancholic church-like organ, which wanders aimlessly and eerily. To compliment it, Kanzyani includes some spoken male Shamanic Spanish vocals which, if heard on a large soundsystem, would sound like the dancefloor was eavesdropping in on an important spiritual conversation.
Woodoo Samba (digital bonus) is more beat centric. Relying upon a few simple drum elements, Kanzyani squeezes out an infectious druggy warehouse loop by constantly re-arranging its core patterns. It is almost impossible to guess what's coming next because the track is forever on the move.
The final offering on the EP, Holi Revolver (digital bonus), is perhaps the most unorthodox track in the collection. With a rough broken beat, the track is pure techno even though it avoids a four four beat throughout. Loopy and hypnotic, it's an abstract slice of warped dance music that is impossible to remain stationary to.
From this EP it comes as no surprise to learn that Kanzyani has recently been playing, and sharing music and ideas with Romania's new breed of house DJs/producers. The Slovenian says he is especially connected with young Romanian artists like Praslea, Afumati, Herodot, and Cezar Lazar, and you can hear that in his confident, bold approach to new rhythms and beat construction.
Valentino Kanzyani's Love & Gratitude EP is the first half of a two part EP series for Cadenza. A full length album from the Slovenian producer will then follow later this year.

His later releases on Be Chosen, Kurbits Records, A:RPIA:R and the appearance of his work on Cocoon compilation have only proven that he is here to stay. His modest, honest and hard working caracter can be felt within amazing music production as well as in his Dj sets.
