Biography of XRS

Real name / Michael de Oliveira Nicassio

With a career already spanning more than 15 years in the Dance music Industry, XRS (Michael de Oliveira Nicassio) is recognised as one of Brasil’s leading dance music producers, Label Owner, DJ, and Live Act. XRS’s music is infused with his trademark sound created entirely from Brasillian-home-grown beatz. His music is a delicious blend of percussion fused with bossa nova / soul arrangements that continue to create their very own niche for his productions in today’s Dance Music markets.

XRS hails from a strong musical background. It was inevitable that he would soon choose his own musical path. His father, an established Brasillian musician, inspired XRS from a very young age. During his early teenage years XRS began to start his own musical career. At first he tried to form a band in Sao Paulo, but it was to be an unsuccessful attempt. He decided to go it alone, and this was when he started using his father’s 4 channel, multi-track equipment to create his own unique sound. Some of the first tracks that gravitated him towards the dance music scene included: Ten City's "That's the Way Love Is", Inner City's "Goodlife", and Beat Club's "Security". He recalls the first 12" single he ever bought was Crystal Waters "Gypsy Woman". XRS also cites Jazzanova as having a huge inspirational impact on him.

It all began back in 1996, with the founding of his first project XRS Land he released his first EP called “From the Land to the City”. This project culminated in his debut album Sarau (released by Trama / Sambaloco in 1999), The Brazil EP (released by V Recordings in 2001), and the track LK (a remix of Toquinho and Jorge Ben Jor Brazilian classic “Carolina Carol Bela”) featured in the Top 20 of the UK’s official Top 40 singles chart in 2002.

The inspiration for Sarau featured a lot of XRS’s childhood musical memories, which predominantly came from his father. His father even played a role on the album, singing and playing guitar on the track 'Só'. The whole album delivers a very sweet atmosphere, blending popular Brazilian music with Dance music in a way that isn't only dance-floor oriented, but it also includes a chilled out lounge style that brings forth images of a relaxed sunny afternoon at Cafe del Mar and as such can be listened to at any time and for any occasion. The leading track of that album is 'The Secrets of The Floating Island', which became famous thanks to its release on V Recording's "Brazil EP" and received massive support from DJs. Another track, 'Bom dia', was also released on the Sònar compilation of 2001.

XRS has played in almost every continent, in festivals such as PercPan (Brazil), Sónar (Spain) and EXIT (Serbia), and clubs like The End (UK), The Womb (Japan), D-Edge (Brazil), Watergate (Germany), and Roxy (Czech Republic).
