NIGHTFLIGHT: Friday Nights Alright For Flightin'
Room 1: Nicky Siano (Studio 54/The Gallery)
Room 2: Tonie Walshe's Sleezebox
Button Factory, Friday 26th June, 11pm
For those that don't know, Nicky Siano was the disco dj who perfected the art of beatmatching at his 'Gallery' nights in New York in the early 70's. His innovations were to inspire future clubland legends like Frankie Knuckles and Larry Levan, and eventually landed him a slot at the mythical New York disco palace Studio 54.
He was one of the first DJ's to move into the studio, collaborating with Arthur Russell and Talking Heads' David Bryne on the 1978 leftfield disco classic 'Kiss Me Again', which has featured on mix albums like Optimo 'Kill The DJ' and Joey Negro and Sean P's 'Disco Not Disco'. Following a long hiatus from DJ-ing he took to the decks again at NYC's infamous 'Body and Soul' parties in 1998, and hasn't stopped since. A collection of 'Gallery' favourites was released on Soul Jazz in 2004, the same year he ripped Ri-Ra a new one on his Irish debut for Downtownsounds.
He's been all the way round the world a few times since, taking his bag of disco classics and obscurities, as well as a collection of bang up to date house music, with him on the way. Now 54, he is embarking upon a farewell tour this year before he settles into his disco dotage. Suffice to say this is a once off opportunity to see one of the great characters of clubland in the flesh. Unmissable!
Also check out the mysterious 'Sleezebox' hosted by Dublin legend Toni Walsh (Powder Bubble/Ham) in the side room, all will be revealed shortly,
