New weekly at the Water Taxi Beach!
From the flat fields of Ohio to the concrete jungle of New York, Todd Sines' environments; real and virtual, have served as inspiration for his unique, hybrid sound. His post punk, industrial, and hip-hop upbringings, filtered through an obsession with analogue and early digital technology, resulted in stripped down electronic funk; before minimal was mnml - it was just effective. Through his techno band, Body Release, with key Ohio players Titonton Duvanté, Charles Noel [Archetyp] and Mike Szewczyk, they dabbled in early rave sounds before embarking on their own paths. Todd's introduction in early 1993 to Detroit's Carl Craig and Daniel Bell resulted in seminal releases with Peacefrog, Planet E and 7th City by year end. Catching the ear of Richie Hawtin, "boiling point" was featured on his debut mix CD in 1995 on Mixmag. Soon after, releases on Andy Vaz's Background Records and Titonton's own Residual brought his sound to house and techno aficionados worldwide. Since his move to New York in 2003, he's worked with a variety of other artists, including !!!, Death in Vegas, Liquid Liquid's Sal Principato and Apollo Heights; he's remixed Alexander Robotnick, Paul Randolph, Robert Owens, Moonstarr, Adam Marshall, Lanoiraude and more. With his new material with Natacha Labelle on Frankie, he pushes the boundaries of house music, and with the resurrection of his .xtrak alias on YORE, his return to jackin' minimal funk reminds people of where it all started.
Also providing musical fun will be our resident DJs:
Sameer: After a successful stint as a San Francisco Internet entrepreneur, in the late 90's Sameer started his techno career producing the Urban Wasteland renegade parties in abandoned naval weapons warehouses, half-built buildings, under freeways, atop cranes, and in container and train yards around the Port of Oakland. In 2001 he traveled throughout central and eastern Europe and played at parties both small and large in cities as varied as Belgrade, Serbia, Varazdin, Croatia, and Torun, Poland. Heightened security after 9/11 made it difficult to continue, so he put his records into storage Since then he's migrated to New York and resurrected his DJ career, but not his criminal one. He is great at getting people moving to his unique mix of music that is both relaxing and alien at the same time.
Alex Ward: Alex has been behind the decks since 1992 and since then has played all over California as well as in New York, Boston and Brazil. After returning to his native Bay Area after college he became entrenched in the San Francisco underground scene and was an early vanguard for the Jungle/ Drum and Bass sound at parties such as Harmony, Cloudfactory and Viberation and later at the seminal Eklektic weeklies. In 2000 he began transitioning into 2-step garage and breaks, becoming a resident at The Top on Haight street and throwing the first 2-step undergrounds in the city with his partner Mike B. Since moving to New York in 2004, Alex has expanded his range of styles deciding to focus on upfront, positive dance music instead of any particular sound.
Lisa Fox: Lisa has spent most of her decade-long DJ career on the west coast in San Francisco and Seattle, playing techno, house, electro, minimal, and experimental music for the underground communities. With a focus on event production, she has produced numerous events pairing together audio and visual artists under the name Subliminal Broadcast, which was born from a show she produced on Groovetech, one of the first Internet radio stations. She's played at parties large and small alongside world-re-known artists, at intimate bar venues, clubs, outdoor festivals and large industrial warehouses. A true music addict, Lisa has been collecting records and digital music since grade school, and has promoted the development of peer-to-peer technology since 1999. Currently Lisa is focusing her time on audio and video production, working on producing an album and creating music videos for herself and other independent artists.
