Andrey Radovski (Sound Noir / Helping Hands)
Mike Niola (Dephektive / halcyon)
It was a stone groove back in August when Adultnapper and Eric Cloutier kicked off halcyon’s year-long 10th Anniversary bru-ha-ha in the top secret speakeasy-style basement of Stay, so we decided to make it a regular thing! For this next installment we’ve sandwiched a few bright young talents around one of our favorite veterans.
While relatively unfamiliar to the youthful Techno devotees that frequent Stay’s weekly Thursdays, MKL is an established force in the city’s more mature deep house scene, having made his mark with Lion1Music, the imprint he runs, and with 3 Generations Walking, the live afro-soul band he leads. Indeed, few DJs are entrusted by François K to helm Deep Space in his absence, and MKL is on that short list with Brendon Moeller and luminaries like Theo Parrish and King Britt. Not shabby. Now, with the stranglehold of Minimal Techno giving way to the warm sound of deep Tech-House, we thought it high time the kids get a proper dose of deep electronic house music served by one of the city’s most respected players. Expect a tightly mixed, musically programmed set of deep tech touched with an afro-soul rhythmic sensibility.
Andrey Radovski is a rising star of the new NYC school of house. As one half of the DJ duo Helping Hands, along with partner Amaury Arias, Andrey holds down a casual residency at East Village favorite Key Bar and also co-produces the Sound Noir series of loft parties. The booking selections for Sound Noir alone speak volumes about the maturity of Andrey’s ear. Eschewing the obvious and the trendy, the event challenges the crowd of euro-techno obsessed newbies with sets by NY, Chicago and Detroit underground stalwarts like Rick Wade.
Mike Niola is a name we hope you will be hearing more in the near future. Sequestered in his native Staten Island, Mike is one of those telents hiding in a bedroom just waiting to be discovered. At a very tender age he has already established his own studio and label and has honed his DJ skills and tastes to match those of DJs with a few years on him. Check out his early tracks on his own Dephektive label, available exclusively on halcyondigi.com
