Happy Volidays! On Friday, December 11th, VOLATL returns to the underground for its annual holiday celebration. Last December, VOLATL and listed hosted an incredible live set from Mobilee’s Exercise One at Sonotheque, and this year’s underground event will feature equally high-caliber dance music, positive vibes, debauchery, and top-notch sound. “Happy Volidays” will run until the wee hours of the morning, and will feature crystal-clear, innovative sound design in an extremely intimate underground environment.
Headlining “Happy Volidays” is Stockholm’s Mikael Stavöstrand. For over ten years, the L.A.-based producer/DJ has been lauded as a key figure of the Swedish electronic-music scene for his unique interpretations of minimal club techno as well as for producing some of the most essential experimental electronic music of the past five years. Stavöstrand mixes deconstructed sounds with funky little beats to create complex minimal dance textures. As a solo artist and collaboratively, Stavöstrand has produced dozens of celebrated releases and remixes on revered labels like Spectral, Adjunct, Contexterrior, Rrygular, Mo’s Ferry, Sunset Diskos, Thema, Lick My Deck, Freak ‘n Chic, Airdrop, Auralism, and many more. Simply put, Mikael rocks dance floors with a winning combination of twisted techy beats, jackin’ rhythms, and warm grooves.
Also performing is Sonotheque resident and Ghostly/Spectral recording artist Kate Simko, who is certainly a treasure of Chicago’s electronic music community. Propulsive, groovy and hypnotic, Kate’s music occupies the space between techno and house with an international voice that sets it apart. In 2008, Kate’s Spectral EP She Said, was critically acclaimed worldwide and topped Beatport charts for weeks. Her brilliant releases can be heard in the sets of some of the world’s biggest DJs. She has played London’s Fabric, Berlin’s Berghain, the famed Sunday School for Degenerates party in New York, Winter Music Conference in Miami, Detroit’s Movement Festival, Montreal’s Mutek festival, Seattle’s Decibel festival and more.
Also lined up to play is Chicago’s Jason Patrick. His recent appearances at Varsity All-Stars in Chicago, Bionic in San Francisco, and ReSoute Detroit have earned him a nationwide reputation for seamless mixing in his DJ sets and tight, well-mastered original productions. His Klectik 005 project, “Octollo,” which features a remix by Elon, has received the support of some of the world’s best DJs. He now finds himself quite busy with remix projects and directing new projects for his label Klectik.
Rounding out the lineup is Max Jacobson, an accomplished up-and-coming Chicago producer who has released groovy, experimental house music on labels like Miniatura and Klectik. The former Detroiter has recently wowed at his many appearances around Chicago and Detroit, and his forthcoming Klectik release is some of his finest production work to date.
In May of 2009, VOLATL enjoyed tremendous success following its highly-acclaimed Movement after-party in Detroit, The Other 9 to 5. Other recent successes include VOLATL’s springtime underground event, Game On, and several succesful editions of its monthly residency at Sonotheque. Hoping to expose audiences to the depth of the artistry in techno, minimal and house scenes, VOLATL’s Sonotheque events have featured a wide variety of amazing guest headliners including Osborne (Spectral residency), Bruno Pronsato, Exercise One, Elon, Ryan Elliott, Dilo, and Sonja Moonear, among others. VOLATL has consistently produced dozens of memorable techno events in Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Miami with a forward-thinking approach to bookings and cutting-edge sound systems at clubs, lounges, and unique underground loft spaces.
