Function, aka Dave Sumner, should be a familiar name to anyone who's been paying attention to techno in New York City for the past 15 years. Heavily influence by the early New York rave scene (Limelight, NASA, Storm, etc), Dave dove into production with a few releases on Damon Wild's seminal Synewave label in the mid-90s. From the late 90s to the early 00s, Function put out many productions on his own label, Infrastructure. He also made an undisclosed number of the incredibly popular, anonymous User techno 12"s. He probably made a ton of other anonymous records too, but we'll never know for sure. In the process he made a strong artistic connection with Female and Regis from the UK, and formed Portion Reform with Regis, releasing a handful of 12"s on Downwards. This connection remains strong to this day. In 2008, Dave moved to Berlin and began to strongly focus on the Sandwell District label, which was undoubtedly one of the breakout labels that year. Not a ton is known about the label, but it appears that Function, Regis, and Female are somehow behind it. They have no website and do zero promotion. The records are beautifully packaged and pressed onto colored vinyl. The label was launched in 2002, and has only put out 15 releases since then, each one well worth owning. In 2009, the techno spotlight is shining brightly on Sumner. He appears regularly at Berghain and other huge clubs around Europe, and from all reports we've heard, his live set completely owned the Labyrinth Festival in Japan this year. Tonight will be only the third time he's performed this new live set, and we're honored to be hosting it.

Traversable Wormhole has become one of the hottest mystery artists in the techno scene in 2009. TW's records have found their way into the crates of discerning techno and dubstep DJs worldwide such as Chris Liebing, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettman, Mathew Herbert, Andrew Galluzi, Surgeon, Function, Frankie Bones, Luke Slater, Surgeon, DJ Deep, and received huge support from shops like Hardwax, Rub A Dub, and Juno. mnml.ssgs, one of our favorite blogs, tracked down TW via Twitter and wound up with a beautiful dj mix, which you can find here. Traversable Wormhole has many years of experience performing under his/her/their well known projects names. Tonight will be Traversable Wormhole's world debut live performance, and whether or not his/her/their true identity will be revealed remains unknown.

Falko Brocksieper founded the labels Sub Static and Karloff Rekordings, along with MIA. After many years of DJing, Falko's first record was released on Sub Static in 2001, followed by further 12"s on his own label, as well as on Resopal, Treibstoff, Dumb Unit, Tuningspork, Contexterrior, and most recently on Mobilee's sister label, Leena Music. In 2003, he finished his debut album "Hoax Deluxe", which manifested his style between hypnotic minimalism and buzzing, organic analog funk. In 2004, Falko Brocksieper left his longstanding homebase Cologne, to refuel with new energy and inspiration in Berlin, which has already shown effect in a number of new releases and remixes, including his second album, which was released in 2008 on Sub Static. Falko appeared at The Bunker two years ago as part of a Sub Static showcase with MIA. He completely blew the doors off the place that night, and we gained a whole new respect for him as a DJ. Check out the links below for further proof of his expertise behind the decks.

Thu, 10 Dec 2009Sumner's performance was in the realm of high art in my opinion.

i forgot to ask...what the hell was that modular synth Sumner was jamming out on?

Wed, 09 Dec 2009Dave absolutely killed it - Bunker is always fantastic but this was a particularly special one. It was one hell of a night to come out of my self-imposed DJ retirement (8 years!). To my fellow Fat Camp DJs, we earned our beards! Thanks Bryan for a fantastic night. m-
