Snafu
2nd January
Doors 11pm
Riva Starr - aka Stef Miele - couldn’'t be hotter right now. It doesn’t hurt that Claude VonStroke and Jesse Rose, the two men who sit on top of the pile, happen to be two of his biggest fans.
Having doted up his first two releases for Claude’s ‘Dirtybird’ and Jesse’s ‘Front Room’ in 2007, he followed these up with another two in 2008 as well as two more for Fatboy Slim’s ‘Southern Fried Records’ and a 12’ on ‘Kindisch’, the more techy sub-label of the brilliant ‘Get Physical’ label in Berlin.
The Riva Starr sound is very distinctive, often carrying that gypsy spirit, drawing influence from Balkan folk/rock. He describes his sound as ‘Snatch!’, although his good friend Laidback Luke recently described his style as ‘Mezcla’, a Spanish word used to describe a mixture of different things, which aptly applies to Stef’s sound, with his World influences and eclectic beats. You’ll hear it throughout his upcoming album ‘If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade’ out on Made to Play in January, especially on the first single ‘I Was Drunk’, which features the self-edited video using footage from Balkan director Kusturica, raking up over 40,000 hits on YouTube. The Balkan sound is just one style that Riva Starr is known for, and throughout his set you’ll hear many twists and turns for that proper Mezcla experience.
