Square Cat hits the Queen of Hoxton for 2010. A new London club night, it’s a bi-monthly appointment starting from the 22nd January in one of London’s best venues. The nights will feature some of the most unique and groundbreaking DJs from across the spectrum of electronic music, while the basement also showcases live acts you’ll be hearing about more and more - if you haven’t already started to do so.
For the launch night on Friday 22nd January…
Upstairs features a DJ set from The Broken Hearts. Well-known for their distinctive brand of spectacular DJing, they have played some of the most exclusive venues in London, as well as New York, Paris, Moscow and Milan. Their eclectic sets have been described by The Independent as, "a Hollywood musical on hallucinogenics." Time Out say; "Turntable Goddesses Amber and Nisha are guaranteed to pull out a plethora of delights from both the DJ crate and the dressing-up box".
Supporting is London based DJ and promotion Stop.Look.Listen - spanning the breadth of quality disco, house and soul, spinning everywhere from the beach bars of Ibiza to Hackney's underground basement parties.
In the basement, we welcome The Good Natured. Sarah McIntosh is an 18-year old from Berkshire. Her debut EP ‘Warriors’ is four songs, each of them an electro-pop gem, showing such a total understanding of the genre’s nuances and emotional/emotionless contradictions that she arrives as a compelling new talent. Picked up on by the likes of Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens and Tom Robinson, songs off “Warriors” received extensive play on Radio 1 and BBC 6Music. The EP also spawned features in the likes of Artrocker, The Guardian and The Sunday Times (Breaking Act). With rave reviews, Sarah found herself being compared to the likes of a young Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux, and lyrically to Morrissey.
Alongside The Good Natured are Duologue, a four-piece band from London. With their music featured on the new series of Skins, having performed their first NME radio live session and featuring, amongst other things, in Disorder Magazine and QX as ‘Ones To Watch’, there is no doubt Duologue are going places.
Our DJ headliner is Krust. At the creative heart of the drum and bass scene for more than 15 years, Krust was one of the founders of the Full Cycle/Reprazent collective alongside Roni Size and DJ Die, breaking through into mass culture winning the Mercury Music Prize in 1997, while still managing to remain at the cutting edge of contemporary urban music.
Closing the night is Pariah, one of the most interesting and promising DJs hitting the London scene. He has work coming on R&S Records and his discography already includes a beautiful remix of The XX’s ‘Basic Space’
Season Five’s Snugfelix provides DJ support from 9pm.
