MARCO RESMANN (Upon You Records / Luna City Express) , Germany
It is the year 2009. It is approximately 15 years ago that Marco Resmann first stood innocently behind his two Technics decks and mixer and excitedly took his first stumbling baby steps into the world of DJing and electronic music. The Loveparade was going from strength to strength and the maelstrom that surrounded Techno and House music had already taken hold of Marco. Berlin, his hometown, actually the whole country was in a state of anticipation. Everyone was out buying drum machines and synthesizers, there was so much to discover. Every centimeter of this new magical, musical universe had to be measured uncovered and tried out. The first parties, the first self produced tracks, everything was intense and new. The world was on fast forward, with the bass drum as its constant pulse.
The 90’s would be a decade of discovery for Marco and would lay the foundations for the future of his professional career. He sucked in everything that he could find. Whether as a DJ or producer, knowledge was gathered and skills were refined. Projects were started, completed and then new projects begun. There wasn’t a master plan to go by; it was all about following his passion and his personal convictions. In the late 80’s Chuck Roberts once proclaimed “House is a feeling” when describing warm analog bass phrases. That one sentence would change Marco’s way of thinking and House music would become the soundtrack of his life.
Marco and Norman Weber met at a Millennium party nearly ten years ago. They soon realized that they were both on the same wave length and it was the same songs that made their eyes sparkle. So they began to Dj together and many long sleepless nights were spent in the studio until slowly but surely Luna City Express came into existence.
Marco continued solo work under the name Phage, releasing his first maxi on Martin Landsky’s label Intim in 2002 but projects with friends always had priority. 2005 was the year that all the time acquiring knowledge
and years of experimenting had finally reached the stage where he could turn his passion for the music into a career. Or better put, his career picked up the momentum that it would continue to have until the present day. Next to Marco and Norman’s project Luna City Express which joined the Moon Harbour house label from Leipzig in 2005, becoming a major player next to the core acts Daniel Stefanik and Matthias
Tanzmann, Marco also brought a new project to life with Tassilo Ippenberger and Thomas Benedix called Pan Pot who’s sound was more in the Trippy corner of Minimal techno. Anja Schneider who had become aware of Pan Pot early on soon signed them to her new label Mobilee, where they quickly advanced to be the label’s main act with their under cooled and reduced sound. Another project under the name Phage & Daniel Dreier was also very successful, not only adding a new edge to the labels sound with their release on Tom Clark’s label Highgrade but also releasing two maxi’s on Frankfurt’s longstanding label Klang. This project was also more minimalistic in style than where his true love lay - House Music.
SIMON BAKER (20:20 Vision / Infant Recordings / Cocoon), UK
Simon Baker has now been a shining light of the UK house scene for many years now, delivering hit after dance floor hit for a succession of the highest profile labels on the underground scene.
Initial forays on 2020 Vision and his own Infant Records in 2004 quickly established Simon’s reputation and profile very early on before a succession of key releases in summer 2007 – Plastik (initially on his own label Infant, then snapped up by Playhouse) - ‘Confused’ on Viva, ‘The Fly’ on Connaisseur, catapulted him forward to the next level and were to break him worldwide. ‘Plastik’ was eventually voted 4 single in Resident Advisor’s prestigious single of the year award.
Moving in to 2008 and 2009, Simon was by now in high demand both for original material and remix work and he continued to deliver knock outs on a regular basis, with particular highlights being ‘U’ for Sven Vath’s ‘Cocoon Compilation H’ album; ‘Kaskazi’ (Get Physical), which was his first collaboration with now regular production cohort Jamie Jones, and his hugely well received remixes for Simian Mobile Disco ‘Sleep Deprivation’ and Radio Slave ‘Bell Clap Dance’ on Rekids , amongst others.
Simon enjoys a fantastic reputation as a DJ, cultivated over the last 17 years and now holds residencies at two of the UK’s most acclaimed underground nights - Asylum at The Mint Club in Leeds, DDD in London. He is also, by now, a regular feature at some of the world’s best clubs and parties – Weekend Club, Watergate, Robert Johnson, Panorama Bar and Cocoon in Germany, Droog (LA), The EndUp in San Francisco , BlkMarket (NYC), Flex in Vienna, Fabric, Mint Club , The Arches ,The Warehouse Project, Below and The End (UK), Nitsa in Barcelona, Piknic Electronik festival, Montreal; Unit (Tokyo), the terrace at Space, Ibiza and regularly tours North and South America, Australia, Asia….
SHADES OF GRAY LIVE (BEEF Records) Aus, Czech
The project Shades of Gray is the brainchild of Beef Records managers Michal Ruzicka (dj Schwa) and Nick West. Founded at the end of 2006 the collaboration was developed to reflect Michal and Nick’s diverse musical backgrounds and tastes.
Their first Vinyl release – Simplicity (released in 2007), drew attention from Djs and producers such as Hernan Cattaneo, D-Nox, Nick and John Dalagelis, Pena, Guy J and more. Early in 2008, four of their tracks were picked up by Mutekki label founder Juergen Dreissen. These tracks were released on a 12” vinyl with German label Plus Minus (aka Mutekki ) and achieved great success reaching the top 10 of the Beatport tech house chart and #3 on decks.de vinyl sales chart.
Shades have also shown a talent for remixing. Already cutting edits for some of the bigger names in the business including Ramon Tapia, Moonbeam and Deepchild. This has also been reciprocated with some great remixes by the likes of Alex Kenji, Ramon Tapia, Hirtenfellner, Lutzenkirchen, Pezzner and Moonbeam to name a few.
The Shades of Gray live show is an unusual blend of house, minimal and techno styles. SOG remix their tracks on stage by layering deep grooves with intricate percussion and melody, always keeping the sound fluid by taking the listener to unexpected places.
In 2010 there are more Shades of Gray releases in the pipe line on Omnis, Kaato, BEEF records, Mutekki, Flow records, Frequenza, Tribal Vision and other labels.
