We're all aware of music's power to transport us to another place. But with 3D Audioscape – developed by Martyn Ware’s company Future Of Sound alongside fellow synth pop legend Vince Clarke of Depeche Mode, Yazoo, and Erasure fame – you can literally control sound in all kinds of three-dimensional parameters. From left to right, front to back, and over and under: think some kind of audio version of Avatar.

From installations in museums all around the world to big open-air exhibitions, Ware plays the part of a soundscape jester, able to transplant the audio map from another time and space. Such examples as invisible protest marches walking through the space, and helicopters flying overhead that aren’t there, are just the tip of the iceberg of what is possible.

Together with an equally mind-bending visual component courtesy of onedotzero and the very special atmosphere at the Royal Albert Hall’s loading bay (location subject to licence), 3D Audioscape provides the perfect setting for a clash encounter of the third kind. While Plaid will play a DJ set, atmospheric soundscape queen Mira Calix, fellow Warp signee Clark, Ninja Tune's King Cannibal, the mighty Kevin Martin, and other like-minded artists from the world of experimental electronica will literally throw their genre-shaping sounds at each other, exploiting all the possibilities of Ware’s man-machine monster installation. This is bass in your face, London, in the truest sense of the word…

The Red Bull Music Academy has long had a love affair with sound and its mysterious signal paths, inviting pioneers such as Alex Rosner, the inventor of the audio mixer, sound system architect George Stavropoulos, or synthesis mavericks Bob Moog, Don Buchla, and Tom Oberheim, to name but a few. This night will build on this tradition, showcasing cutting-edge technology and exuberant human creativity at the same time. Drowned in sound!
