A man who learnt his trade under Stateside legends like Tony Humphries and
Tee Scott before going on to work with the Basement Boys production team in
New Jersey, Maurice Fulton has been in the production and dj-ing game for
over 20 years now. Having made his European Dj debut in 1990, he went on to
break through to the mainstream when he co-produced Crystal Waters’
worldwide hit ‘Gypsy Woman( La Da Dee)’ in 1992.
Over the years he has recorded or remixed for a ‘who’s who’ of underground
labels – from Warp, Wave and Classic to Output, Compost, Balihu and his
current home, Tirk Records. The London based label is also home to New Young
Pony Club, Greg Wilson, Idjut Boys and Andy Cato of Groove Armada’s
‘SugarDaddy’ project.
His DJ sets are as broad in range as his production credits, zigzagging
smoothly between soul, funk, disco, electroboogie, italo, party classics,
house and future dancefloors sounds.
A regular at world renowned clubs like London’s Fabric and Manchester’s
sadly defunct Electric Chair, his productions have been included on
compilations by the diverse likes of 2 Many Dj’s, Unabombers, Idjut Boys,
Trevor Jackson and Four Tet, and has turned in mixes for the likes of Hot
Chip, Alice Smith and Crazy P.
Recent projects of note include a full length LP for DFA under the Syclops
moniker and an amazing remix of Simian Mobile Disco’s recent collaboration
with Beth Ditto of the Gossip, ‘Cruel Intentions’.
