Kelvin Brown (EYES DOWN/ ELECTRIC CHAIR)
MATT HALSALL (GONDWANa RECORDS)
AGENT J (GROOVEMENT)
Step Up continues its intoxicating late night blend of live performances by internationally acclaimed artists mixed with DJ sets by Manchester's finest.
This night sees Step Up! Go head to head with one of the greastest supporters of Manchester soul vintage to futuristic, the mighty Groovement
DJs taking on Band on the Wall's sound system until 3am:
Kelvin Brown: grew up in Coventry, first exposed to music through hip hop and reggae, and became involved in the rapidly expanding Drum and Bass scene in the Midlands of the early 90s. Moved to Manchester to study, and began to DJ at house parties across the city. Off the back of this he was offered a residency at the now infamous Electric Chair, playing alongside guests such as Danny Krivit, Theo Parrish, Daniel Baldelli, Laurant Garnier, 4-Hero, Charlie Dark, London Electricity and Francois Kervorkian.
In addition, Kelvin started his own night Eyes Down in Manchester, which was recognised as one of the most forward thinking events in the country, with Kelvin and partner in crime Jon-K taking a loyal crowd on something of a journey of musical discovery, alongside the likes of Recloose, I.G Culture, Jazzanova, ?uestlove, Mr Scruff, Pepe Braddock and Moodymann. Their willingness to take in the breath of dance music’s history as well as the most progressive forms of new music, combined with a respect for an audiences ability to deal with music not usually considered suitable for peak time club sets led to a longstanding monthly spot at the now legendary Plastic People club in London.
Kelvin has developed an increasingly uncompromising music policy, focusing on wholly individual selections taking in Jazz, African, 2-Step, Hip Hop, Post-Punk, House, Detroit Techno, Folk, Reggae and Minimalist Classical music. This has led to increasing work as a guest DJ across the globe, having recently returned from very well received sets at the Big Chill festival, Exodus and Garden festivals (Croatia).
He has also provided guest mixes for various radio shows including Benji B's 'Deviation' show on Radio One Xtra, and played live on Gilles Peterson's 'Worldwide' show on Radio One, and received acclaim in the form of DJ magazine and City Life magazine DJ of the year awards.
Matt Halsall: Still only in his mid 20’s, this hugely talented trumpet player has been making major waves in the left of centre music scene of late. Inspired by everything from the modal jazz of Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders through to the esoteric electronics of Theo Parrish, Mark Pritchard and Flying Lotus, he was released two beautiful, breezy albums, ‘Sending My Love’ and ‘Colour Yes’, which have been championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson, who invited Halsall to perform with the Tippetts and Nostalgia 77 at his recent Ronnie Scott’s 50th birthday weekend.
His recently self released second LP has received widespread critical acclaim from both the straight ahead jazz community and the likes of the Independent Newspaper, and he has recently completed projects including a Maida Vale session, with Jose James, and work with Nitin Sawhney.
Agent J: Agent J (aka James Ernesto Lang) heads up Groovement, a weekly show on Unity Radio which sees guests from the funk/soul spectrum drop in (Sharon Jones, Quantic, Dam Funk and Alice Russell have all visited) as well as hip hop and beyond (Ghostface, Flying Lotus, Daedelus). A resident of vinyl oasis Roots Before Branches and live hip hop night In The Loop in addition to several sessions around Manchester, J recently hit Band on the Wall with some 45 action for both Gizelle Smith & the Mighty Mocambos and the Sound Stylistics.
