VOLATL and (re)Chicago Present: Re-Education with DJ Jus Ed
Chicago is recognized around the world for its vital contributions to the development of House music. The city is renowned for musical innovation and solidarity in the eyes of the international electronic-music community. With the combined talents of veteran DJs Mazi and Kate Simko, and promoter Nadia Podolsky, from VOLATL, Chicago will have another opportunity to re-assert itself within this community through a unique, collaborative event dubbed (re.) Chicago, which launched at the legendary “Red Dog” night in April. The August installment of the event series, dubbed Re-Education features legendary East Coast house producer/DJ Jus-Ed.
A voyage into the world of DJ Jus-Ed reveals an adventurous, energetic and spiritual style of playing quality house music. DJ Jus-Ed ’s exposure to a wide range of experiences shapes his unique musical viewpoint. At the tender age of six he was backing up his grandparents in a Jazz duo “Tomi & Eddy” touring from the East to West coast as a drummer, later attending the University of Bridgeport at age 10 to study percussion instruments. His smooth underground sets have captured & educated audiences all the way from his home base in Connecticut to Miami’s South Beach, Germany, London, Russia and more. The Underground Quality Radio Show, on myhouseyourhouse.net currently holds a cult like state with producers and record fiends alike tuning in each an every Wednesday to sample some of that quality deephouse that has become synonymous with Ed’s style. In 2010, Ed continues to play some of the best clubs across Europe, including Fabric in London, Berghain/Panorama Bar in Berlin, Rex Club in Paris, Tape Club In Berlin and more. Jus Ed recently presented a podcast for Resident Advisor to rapturous applaud & continues to receive column inches in highly respected music magazines such as Groove Mag, Debug, Faith, etc. In 2010 ?Ed made the top 100 DJs on Resident Advisor’s end of the year list.
Ghostly/Spectral Sound Recording artist Kate Simko is certainly a treasure of Chicago’s electronic music community, and co-resident for the event series. Propulsive, groovy and hypnotic, Kate’s music occupies the space between techno and house with an international voice that sets it apart. In 2008, Kate’s Spectral EP She Said was critically acclaimed worldwide and topped Beatport charts for weeks. Her brilliant releases can be heard in the sets of some of the world’s biggest DJs. She has played London’s Fabric, Berlin’s Berghain, the famed Sunday School for Degenerates party in New York, Winter Music Conference in Miami,
Mazi is perhaps the most prolific producer and DJ to come from Chicago. In his 18-year career, he has been a regular performer at clubs such as Fabric in London, Avalon in Los Angeles, Red Light in Paris and more. Under the pseudonyms Audio Soul Project and Wasted Chicago Youth (with Justin Long), Mazi consistently finds his music on compilations such as Loco Dice’s The Lab01 and Global Underground and Fabric mixes. His tracks are a regular fixture at the top of the Beatport charts.
In an effort to expose audiences to the depth of the artistry in techno, minimal and house, VOLATL’s recent events have featured a myriad of genre-defining artists including Stacey Pullen, Marcin Czubala, Bruno Pronsato, Exercise One, Ida Engberg, Mr. C and Paco Osuna, among others. VOLATL has produced dozens of memorable techno events in Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Miami with a forward-thinking approach to bookings and cutting edge sound systems. Most recently, VOLATL produced “The Other Nine to Five,” a label showcase for Clink Recordings, launched the (re)Chicago series with Mazi and Kate Simko, produced “Something in the Sky,” a conceptual event with Jeff Mills and Mike Banks, and hosted “Focus on Spectral Sound,” a day party with acclaimed international artist Matthew Dear.
