At 110th Street, we’re as fond of our dance music history as we are of our catch-all sloganeering. In recent times, one of the simplest but most resonant catchphrases which pricked our ears is Bugged Out’s ‘It’s All Just A Big Disco’. And so it is. Whether dropping Paradise Garage staples such as Klein & MBO's 'Dirty Talk' and Loleatta Holloway’s ‘Love Sensation’ or playing classic house from Mr Fingers and Carl Craig or revvin...g up the latest sleek techno creations from Berlin’s Berghain cabal of producers, all our musical choices are informed by a call to disco arms. After all, what is disco? Writing for a recent edition of The Wire magazine, Peter Shapiro marvelously summed it up thus:
“… disco’s syrupy strings, oily he-man vocalists, throbbing synthesizers and pounding 4/4 drums made a night at the club one long come-on by an army of leathery lotharios in half-button Qiana shirts and Zodiac medallions, desperate to get you into their jacuzzzi.”
Now if what doesn’t get you hot under your stretch sequin bandeau top, then it really is time to join Young Fianna Fáil.
Our next date is Saturday 21st August.
Invite all your discoid friends.
