SYNDICATE X REDBULL MUSIC ACADEMY SPECIAL!
SUPPORTED BY HOME PARTIES & RED BULL SINGAPORE
Come 4 December 2010, Syndicate wraps its inaugural year with a Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) Special. RBMA London 2010 alumni, Kidkanevil & Daisuke Tanabe join our own Singapore representative, Cherry Chan, for a mini get together that covers a wide range of the electronic spectrum.
Ever since their RBMA stint earlier this year, both Kidkanevil’s & Daisuke Tanabe’s profiles have risen up in the global music scene. Now three albums deep and with his latest offering ‘Basho Basho’, Knowledge Magazine has placed Kidkanevil “right up there with Flying Lotus”. Known as both a headphone experience and dancefloor dynamite, Kidkanevil tends to present an intelligent journey that blurs the lines between hip hop, future beats, jazz, dubstep and worldwide sounds.
Daisuke Tanabe on the other hand has been getting attention from various music tastemakers and labels. He has been getting releases on labels such as Ninja Tune, BBE and Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings. Taking inspiration from jazz, folk and reggae as well as the whole canon of electronic music, this member of Tony Nwachukwu’s CD-R community knows that notes and melodies are just the guidelines for the feelings that lie beneath.
Joining Kidkanevil & Tanabe is the Syndicate stable comprising of Cherry Chan, Max Lane, Kiat & Sammy Panamuga. The collective’s projection mapping specialist, Brandon Tay, will pilot the visuals for the night.
Syndicate will also be playing host to a special Red Bull Music Academy Workshop session earlier in the evening. All three alumni, Kidkanevil, Daisuke Tanabe & Cherry Chan will be speaking at the workshop. Singapore’s RBMA representative for 2008, Sonicbrat, joins the trio to share their experience as academy participants with aspiring DJs and producers.
This final Syndicate installment for the year also marks the release of the collective’s first EP on Qilin Music. To be dropped on 29 November, the four-track mini compilation features tracks from Cherry Chan, Max Lane & Kiat with a special remix by Kidkanevil himself.
ABOUT RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY
The Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) began in 1998 in Berlin. Throughout the years, RBMA has served as a platform for producers, DJs and musicians to get together in a bid to share their love of music, over workshops, lectures, tutorials and gig activities over a span of two weeks. Tutors from professional fields along the likes of Dixon, Gilles Peterson, M.I.A, Danny Krivit and Jeff Mills have made their appearance at the academy. It was so successful that it moved on to tour the globe conducting annual RBMAs in cities like London, Rome, Cape Town, Seattle, Sao Paola, Melbourne & Toronto over last nine years. Each year, close to 3000 applicants from around the world apply and only 60 participants are selected.
Against a sanitized backdrop of fast food music, Syndicate was conceived over rounds of beers to reduce the growing impact of harmful beats and caveman frequencies in the accelerated world today. Along the way, it transmogrified into a serious idea to create a space for sonic expression and visual experience in post-efficient Singapore. What initially appeared as rounds of accidental & random recruitment exercise soon resulted in the formation of an audio-visual collective with names that are no strangers to the scene and some that are just strange.
Propelled by the inactivity in the electronic margins of the sunny island, Syndicate is here as a super-collective to fill a void. It is now set to tear apart music categorization and regurgitate something to call its own.
