Up and Atom
In a world where it's easier to set a record label up than it is to run a bath, where musicians are driven towards producing 'content' simply to gain 'exposure', where music itself is designed simply to be given away free by blogs, the way to get heard remains the same as it ever has. If you produce great music, people will listen.
J Alexander (Friends Electric)
Over its short lifetime, Friends Electric has has coupled a forward thinking aesthetic with an understanding of techno's historical grounding, and in doing so has released some of the most interesting records of recent years.
Over just ten releases, the fledgling label has featured remixes from such pioneers as Kenny Larkin, Benno Blome and Dirt Crew, while fielding the exciting underground talents of the likes of Tagtraumer, Steve Cole and of course the Leeds-based wizard and Friends Electric head honcho, J Alexander.
Managing to marry techno's toughness with a groove that's absent from much of the 'boom-tish' filler, his records have found their way into as a diverse a set of boxes as Ivan Smagghe, Derrick May, Nic Fanciulli and Laurent Garnier.
A DJ at heart, and a man who's been behind turntables since he was fourteen, we're extremely pleased to be able to bring him to drumro[ll].
Support comes Up & Atom, while SixFootSick will be throwing down some closing sounds. As ever, we're keeping it free before midnight and just £3 after.
