Please send me your last pair of shoes, worn out with dancing as you mentioned in your letter, so that I might have something to press against my heart. ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
I would believe only in a God that knows how to dance. ~Friedrich Nietzsche
1/30/11
Dearest friends,
First, we want to apologize to you who have been waiting so long to hear of our next party together. Some of you may have heard there were dates and venues scheduled, only to find out it wasn’t happening. We tried to put something together that was worthy of your time and attention. After several false starts, we’ve got a date and location.
But before we get too far into that, a few words about the flame we try to keep alive with these gatherings. Each of you knows why you still love to dance, for many of you after all these years. It’s that feeling of letting loose, of movement as freedom, of that moment on the dance floor when, 2000 individuals become one…..one pulsating, rhythmic organism. And in that organism is a bond that time itself is not able to break.
That’s why, through the years, people would come together for one night and still have a warm feeling about that Saturday night/Sunday morning days, weeks, even months after the fact. This is what we pursue, even as none of us are kids anymore. It isn’t every week anymore, but our lives have changed, and so have yours. Yet we still have this in common, and we do our best to see to its continuation.
Our date, as you’ll see on the flyer, is April 3rd from 6:00PM until 4:00AM. The venue is historic. Though it’s now known as Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker St. in the Village has a long and distinguished history as the site of the Village Gate. From 1958-1993 it played host to such legends as John Coltrane, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and many more. It was also the scene of “Salsa Meets Jazz” in the late ‘70s.
With your help, we plan to honor that legacy, as well as the memory of so many friends and places that have passed on into dance music history. So please join us for another night of music, dancing, and magic.
With much love ,
