Golden Cage is back this Easter Sunday, hosting an enduring legend of dance music, Desyn Masiello, befittingly at the enduring Sydney venue Soho. Former host to a wealth of international talent ranging from John Digweed to Michael Mayer, Soho has been underutilized of late for quality underground music. However, now with a cranking new soundsystem, it’s all systems go to return the Kings Cross space to its glory days.
And who better to help with the rebirth than Desyn Masiello, a star who have followed dance music since its birth, but still remain relevant in today’s mostly fickle electronic music world with a mammoth 5 hour set to showcase his amazing talent?
Born and raised in London, Desyn was exposed to the acid house and rave movement during his early teens, and became a devoted follower of outdoor raves and clubs alike. Buying his first set of turntables in 1990, and amassing a collection of early house, techno and rave music, Desyn was propelled to international stardom in the late 90’s on the back of a promo mix he sent to random individuals who had responded to his posts on a variety of dance music forums. Over a decade later, he has played in almost any country with a dance music scene you can think of, started successful labels such as Sexonwax and Soulglow, recorded a variety of compilations (including the critically acclaimed Balance 008), pushed the limits of technology in a DJ set with former partners Omid 16b and Demi as SOS, and had productions feature on compilations by the likes of Danny Howells and Deep Dish. Today, Desyn is respected for his ability to unearth previously undiscovered threads in the tapestry of house music and weave these into his trademark warm, emotive sound with precise mixing and intelligent programming.
