David Morales is a true vanguard in the world of dance music and the efforts of the Brooklyn native remain unparalleled. As a producer, he’s enjoyed multiple Grammy nominations including a win in 1998 for Remixer of the Year. His most recent successes include “Here I Am,” a song included in “The Devil Wears Prada,” as well as the club classic “How Would U Feel” from his own “2 Worlds Collide” album via the Ultra imprint. In 2005 / 06 his re-production/ remix of Mariah Carey’s “It’s Like That” and “Say Somethin’” topped the charts around the world. In 2006 he also lent his name to the “ALDO FIGHTS AIDS” campaign as the first club culture icon to be invited to stand alongside a diverse group of the Hollywood and music industry elite.
Morales has worked diligently both as a dj and in the studio as a producer and remixer for over 20 years. He is one of the most steady working DJ’s on the planet. In 2006 he released a new single on Kingstreet and currently has a remake of the 80’s single “Keep It Coming,” performed by The Face feat. Nicki Richards, on his DMM imprint. Morales also compiled and mixed the AX (Armani Exchange) release “Nocturnal,” a Winter CD music compilation sold in AX stores and exclusively at Virgin Mega Stores.
He’s appeared on numerous international television networks including BBC, MTV, Music Plus, BET and Tokyo TV. He co-hosted “The Grind,” MTV’s high profile dance show from the ‘90s as well as had the Friday night “Morales at Midnight” on NYC #1 Dance Station WKTU for 10 years. Currently he is doing guest radio shows on select national radio stations around the world.
Morales has surfaced from the generally faceless world of dance music as a visible icon, appearing in a worldwide campaign with Iceberg Jeans which had the tanned and toned David showing up on buses and billboards. He’s built up a celebrity status that has led to him being featured in magazines such as L’Uomo, GQ and three different editions of Vogue (U.S., British and Italian).
That’s where the story of a successful DJ/producer in the world of dance music typically ends, but for David Morales it’s just been a springboard into a wealth of ideas and ventures, a giant family tree all rooted in the soul of dance music. His long running production company Def Mix will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in August 2007. Manager/Partner Judy Weinstein is one of dance music’s most lauded and respected pioneers. The management arm is the watchful eye for the careers of Frankie Knuckles, Satoshi Tomiie and Hector Romero. Morales is also a co-owner of the Montreal nightclub Stereo and recently launched Sonic Nightclub in Toronto. Both clubs have become the place to be on Friday and Saturday nights.
“I am creating a place for people to forget their troubles for a while.” It is important in the world we are living in today.”
