This month we’d say we’ve outdone ourselves on the house and funky front! If you have any interest in UK funky at all, you won’t want to miss DJ Champion, Fis-T and Mad One all on the same bill, for free…

DJ Champion you’ll almost certainly know for tunes like Motherboard, Tribal Affair and of course Lighter, with its reappropriation of a classic junglist sample and bassline. After he played with Terror Danjah and the Butterz crew recently, people were saying one thing to us: book Champion!

Fis-T is another producer with an anthem to his name in Night Hunter, pressed to vinyl last year by Oneman’s 502 Recordings. Then Aphex Twin (of all people) brought him to a new audience by dropping it into his headline set at the Bloc festival recently. Maybe less well known is the fact that it’s the tip of the iceberg: Fis has material for days, so we look forward to hearing what he pulls out.

If we’re talking big tunes, Mad One was comfortably near the top of the heap in 2010, thanks to the House Girls album on his own Devine Recordings. Raw, stripped down and taking lessons from no-one else at all, his beats are all the evidence you need that this stuff is alive and well. He and Devine’s DJ Jewelsy are essential listening on one of the most important pirates right now, Live FM. Watch how everyone else starts to book them in 2011…
