20 Years Red D
It has been 20 years since Red D first played a vinyl in front of a crowd, and it takes us back to 1991 and his highschool days where he was appointed to be the DJ on the fundraiser for the senior year trip to Greece. Simply because he didn’t need to be paid and he had the most music. There was no looking back after this gig, because DJ’ing was too much fun not to keep on doing it. And so here we are in 2011, and Red D is still DJ’ing, and still having massive fun doing it.
The Sunday Matinee
Many people had been asking for a new Sunday Matinee, and truth be told, it was never the intention to set up another edition of this legendary Sunday party. But for this special occasion the exception to the rule applies, and so on Sunday 15th May Charlatan will open its doors on Sunday afternoon once again.
But here was the dilemma: after having 5 legendary artists from Chicago, Detroit and New York, where to go next? Many people had been suggesting names: Danny Krivit, François K, Moodymann, etc. Obvious names when thinking about the previous guests Larry Heard, Kenny Larkin, Ron Trent, Mike Dunn & Kerri Chandler, but maybe just a bit too obvious for this special edition.
So why not go for the DJ that has made a lasting impression on Red D every single time he heard him play? A DJ that is just as fanatical about music and DJ’ing as Red D is himself? And especially a genuinely nice person that will fit the vibe of a Sunday Matinee perfectly? Only one name came to mind: Steffen Berkhahn aka Dixon, leader of the famous Berlin collective Innervisions and one of the world’s finest DJ’s.
Raoul Lambert & Red D = 40 Years of DJ’ing
During the ‘making of’ of this edition of the Sunday Matinee Red D was informed that fellow DJ Raoul Belmans was also celebrating his 20 years as a DJ in 2011. Being a member of Red D’s We Play House Recordings label it was only logical to ask Raoul if he was up for spinning some vinyls as well, so that together Raoul and Red D could celebrate 40 years of DJ’ing, 40 years of music and 40 years of hazy and often legendary nights.
Charlatan: home of the Sunday Matinee
The home of the Sunday Matinee has been Ghent’s Charlatan since the very beginning. For this new edition this will of course still be the case, but this edition will happen on the terrace and in the backroom. With plenty of free bubbles and the possibility to get some fresh bbq-snacks as well.
