The Loft was the location for the first underground dance party and was created by David Mancuso on February 14, 1970 in New York.
Since then, the term loft has come to represent Mancuso’s own version of a non-commercial event, with similar vibe of a private intimate party for friends.
Unlike conventional nightclubs or discotheques, attendance was by invitation only.
This movement inspired such great as Larry Levan, Nick Siano, Frankie Knuckles, Francois K, Todd Terry, Masters at work, Marshall Jefferson, DJ Sneak, and the man himself: Danny Tenaglia – famous in New York for his 10+ hour sets.
As Danny Tenaglia told it – “Music is the Answer” with the kick in the bass and the underlying rhythm as the foundation, vocal, thick cords, a combination of classic club groove with depth contributing a huge influence on the development of the modern dance club as it is today.
